Kucinich opposing veteran Democrat in Ohio primary (AP)

TOLEDO, Ohio ? Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich (koo-SIH'-nich) says he's sticking with his plan to run against fellow Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in a U.S. House primary contest that will pit two veteran lawmakers against each other.

Kucinich had spent the last few weeks mulling whether to run against Kaptur or seek another seat in Cleveland after the Ohio Legislature approved a new congressional district map.

The new map gave Kaptur a bigger chunk of her current district in the Toledo area, leading to speculation that Kucinich might run against Rep. Marcia Fudge instead.

Kucinich said Wednesday that he will he file to run against Kaptur in a district that hugs the Lake Erie shoreline from Cleveland to Toledo.

The winner of the March primary will be heavily favored to win the seat.

Obama lays wreath at Pearl Harbor memorial (AP)

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii ? President Barack Obama has laid a wreath at a memorial honoring those killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The president was joined at the USS Arizona Memorial by his wife, Michelle, late Thursday afternoon. After a moment of silence, the Obamas scattered flower petals in the water.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attacks, which claimed the lives of 2,390 Americans and brought the United States into World War II.

The president is in Hawaii for his annual Christmas vacation. Several White House staffers who traveled to the Honolulu area with Obama joined the president at the Pearl Harbor memorial.

Earlier Thursday, Obama took his family to the beach, then stopped for shave ice, a Hawaiian version of the snow cone.

Oil eases after Iran threat, Italy gets debt boost

By Mike Peacock and Ikuko Kurahone

LONDON (Reuters) - Crude prices broke a six-day rally on Wednesday after Iran's threat to stop the flow of oil from the Gulf was written off as no more than rhetoric, while a strong short-term Italian debt sale eased stress in European markets.

Tehran said on Tuesday it would stop oil transiting through the Strait of Hormuz if sanctions were imposed on its crude oil exports because of its nuclear ambitions. Washington said it saw "an element of bluster" in the threat.

Brent fell 0.9 percent to $108.28 a barrel by 1150 GMT after climbing more than a dollar in the previous session. Prices have surged over 5 percent since December 16.

European shares reversed early losses to add 0.5 percent <.fteu3>, while Asian stocks slipped, leaving the MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus> flat on the day. Futures pointed to a slightly lower open on Wall Street.<.n/>

"The threat by Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz supported the oil market yesterday, but the effect is fading today as it will probably be empty threats as they cannot stop the flow for a longer period due to the amount of U.S. hardware in the area," said Thorbjoern bak Jensen, oil analyst with Global Risk Management.

It has been an ugly year for equities outside the United States.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> fell 0.7 percent, keeping it on course for a 2011 loss of 18 percent, underperforming a 12 percent decline in European shares <.fteu3> and a 9 percent drop in world stocks.

Japan's Nikkei stock average <.n225> ended down 0.2 percent, on track for a 17.6 percent drop this year. <.t/>

Naohiro Niimura, a partner at research and consulting firm Market Risk Advisory Co, said the chances of a violent confrontation with Iran were remote for now but added the tensions would be a major source of volatility in 2012 along with the unresolved euro zone debt crisis.

EURO CURBED

The euro held above an 11-month low against the dollar after Italian short-term debt costs halved at auction, helped by a new government austerity package and cheap liquidity from the European Central Bank.

The country faces the more difficult task of selling long-term debt on Thursday where there will be a greater reliance on international investors to buy 8.5 billion euros of debt with maturities of up to 10 years.

Analysts said market tensions could easily reignite. Italy faces almost 150 billion euros of debt refinancing in February-April alone.

"Tomorrow's auction is more important and will give more insight into general sentiment. Today was a warm-up," said Neil Mellor, currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon.

The euro was last marginally higher on the day at $1.3071.

Safe-haven German Bund futures were barely changed while yields on Italian 10-year bonds dropped to 6.8 percent, just below the 7 percent rate that is widely seen as unsustainable in the long term for the country's finances.

Banks deposited a record 452 billion euros ($538 billion) at the European Central Bank overnight, giving no sign that interbank lending is reviving, although the nearly half a trillion euros of 3-year liquidity handed out by the ECB last week pushed bank-to-bank lending rates lower.

In the United States, data suggested the economy was on track for a moderate recovery, with improving labor market conditions lifting U.S. consumer confidence to an eight-month high in December although U.S. single-family home prices fell more than expected in October.

Wall Street ended flat on Tuesday following a five percent rally last week which pushed the S&P 500 into positive territory for the year.

Gold edged lower, tracking falls in industrial metals and equities.

The 19-commodity Reuters-Jefferies CRB index <.crb> -- largely influenced by U.S. crude oil -- is set for a 7 percent drop in 2011, faring slightly better than equities.

U.S. crude oil has been among the best performers this year with a 10 percent increase, while gold has gained 12 percent as a loss of confidence in the euro zone accelerated investor flight to bullion.

Saints vs Falcons LIVE UPDATES: Drew Brees Chases Dan Marino's Passing Record

Atlanta Falcons (9-5, NFC South)
vs.
New Orleans Saints (11-3, NFC South)
Superdome
New Orleans, Louisiana
8:30 p.m. EST

Although the Packers win over the Bears on Christmas clinched a playoff berth for the Atlanta Falcons, there is still plenty on the line in this NFC South match up on "Monday Night Football." The Falcons arrive at the Superdome in New Orleans with hopes of overtaking the Saints for their second straight division crown. To do so, Matt Ryan and company needs a win tonight and then some help during Week 17.

On the other sideline, the Saints are going for a first-round bye and as well as place in the history books. If the Saints can run their six-game winning streak to seven games then they'll clinch the NFC South crown. Judging the team's recent triumphs, a Saints win likely means that the NFL has a new all-time single-season passing yards leader.

Brees enters this game tonight needing 305 yards to break Dan Marino's longstanding single-season passing yards mark of 5,084 yards that he set in 1984. In the past five weeks, Brees has thrown for totals of 412, 337, 342, 363, 322.

Can Brees break the record? Or can the Falcons' defense push off decisions on the record and the division until next week?

FOLLOW HERE FOR LIVE UPDATES:

On a pass that could have potentially broken the record, Dunta Robinson tips away pass intented for Meachem and picks it off. History on hold.

12-yard gain to Meachem up middle. 1st and 10 out past 40.

After a short return, Brees and Saints take over at their own 21. He's 75 passing yards from record.

@ darrenrovell : Since his shoulder surgery, Brees has earned $59,565,088. Wonder how much Dr. James Andrews charged?
Saints 21 Falcons 10

Brees 230 yards

Falcons finally go vertical but Jones can't catch deep sideline throw in traffic. Ryan takes knee to end half.

This isn't going to cut it. Just short of first down. Last timeout called. 3rd and 1 at ATL 29.

After a touchback, Ryan and ATL offense out on field. 5 yards on first. Timeout.

@ AdamSchein : Aaron Rodgers is getting my vote for league MVP. Drew Brees is getting my vote for offensive player of the year.
@ jamthedirtybird : And that's what Jimmy Graham has done all year. No vertical can out leap 8 inches of height. Can't give Brees ball with that much time
Saints 21 Falcons 10

Brees 230 yards

Brees steps up in pocket and fires right to Graham in end zone. This time he rises and grabs it. No tip. No pick. Six points Saints.

Sproles runs up the middle on 3rd and 8. He bursts through, going right for a big first down. NOLA timeout. 1st and 10 inside 10.

Saints clock it and then call timeout after short gain to Colston. We're at 35 seconds and in field goal range.

Meachem gets loose up the left flank and Brees hits him for a big gain.

Saints lost the plot here. Brees went to call another timeout but couldn't since they'd just called one. Delay of game. It's now 3rd and 12.

Sproles follows his lead for 3 yards. It's 3rd and 7 with 1:10 to play. Saints call timeout.

Colston got his hands to a ball dropped onto him but DeCoud gets in to break it up. 2nd and 10.

Play looked busted up. Stepped up and then went left when that path was blocked and then he finds Meachem over middle on improv. First down.

Saints have ball at their own 25-yard line.

Scoreboard: Saints 14 Falcons 10

Brees 168 yards

He picks up 5 on second down as we hit two-minute warning.

Brees looks for Meachem but Grimes breaks it up.

Roddy White picks up 12 but can't overcome Rodgers penalty. 2:35 on clock. Brees getting the ball back.

Ryan fires a quick out near sideline that appeared to be caught but it's coming back thanks to hold

Despite end zone interception, he needs just 137 yards to break record.

While not a huddle per se, Atlanta takes timeout. Sometimes dialogue is a good thing.

Jaws telling us Ryan loves no huddle. What about teammates? 3rd and 10.

And pass goes incomplete. 2nd and 10. Still no huddle. But not much of a hurry. More than 3:30 on clock.

Ryan completes to White for short pass and he runs for a few more to pick up first down. Clock ticking, no huddling. Ryan audibling.

CTC to conduct road show 'Focus Canada ? India' from March 13?15, 2012 in Jaipur

Canada?s tourism marketing and promotion agency, the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC), will conduct a mega B2B road show, ?Focus Canada ? India?, from March 13-15, 2012 at Fairmont Jaipur. 50 Canadian sellers including Provincial Tourism Boards, tour operators, hotels, lodges, attractions, besides 60 hosted Indian buyers will be attending the road show, which is planned to be set up as a platform to facilitate networking and interactions between the buyers and sellers. This information was revealed by Derek Galpin, MD, CTC China and India. Galpin also informed that the Commission has earmarked a sum of USD 3 million for promotions of destination Canada in India for the year 2012.

In addition to Mumbai and Delhi, CTC is also looking to expand their focus to cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, and Amritsar. Speaking about the Commission?s decision to hold the road show in Jaipur, Galpin said, ?As most travel agents and tour operators in India are based in metro cities, we thought to organise our event at a city where the Indian buyers can stay away from their hometowns, and network. Last year, we had organised the road show in Goa.? CTC is aiming to set up the road show as an educative B2B platform. Besides Niagara Falls and Toronto, CTC is looking at promoting destinations like British Columbia, Monte Rio and Ontario.

Speaking about the increase in the promotion budget for the Indian market, Galpin informed that the CTC is concentrating on developing countries for promotions and marketing campaigns in addition to their traditional markets. ?Currently, we are focusing on India, China and Brazil and are diverting investment from core and traditional markets to these three potential markets where we see a continuous growth opportunity. In 2011, CTC had allocated USD 2.2 million for destination promotion in India and the budgets for India have been increased to USD 3 million for 2012,? he stated. He went on to mention that the CTC expects a 10 per cent year-on-year growth in tourist arrivals from India ? 135,000 tourist arrivals in 2012. In 2010, Canada witnessed 129,000 Indian tourist arrivals and 122,000 from January to October, 2011.

In keeping with its intent to increase promotional activities in India, CTC recently launched a consumer website for the Indian market - jannat.canada.travel. The website, besides offering information about the country, details packages by various tour operators offering tours to Canada. Speaking about the website, Gaplin said, ?CTC has been working in tandem with the Indian travel trade since we set up operations in India. However, we now believe that it?s time to interact with customers directly, and that's where the website comes in. The website mainly talks about different and unique experiences in Canada. Currently, the campaign on the website focuses on summer destinations.?

Bangalore: The UC Berkeley came out in open, elucidating its decision to choose Gmail for its campus email services. This would connect around 70,000 users across the University.
Over the past months, it had witnessed a series of email system crashes, especially one that halted the services for nearly 50 hours. The Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, John Wilton sent an email to the university?s fraternity mentioning about the substantial cost reductions to a tune of $75,000 every year, after the migration to Google Apps.

The soaring popularity of Google products among a vast majority of students and more importantly, a substantial reduction in deployment time for Google Apps has enticed the university. The new system would require around six to ten weeks to be deployed. Additionally, more users are acquainted with Google APIs than Microsoft?s. Further, the fact that other universities have already shifted to Gmail has given an impetus for UC at Berkeley.

Hence there wouldn?t be any consultations with Microsoft support, which could act detrimental in being cost efficient. Hence, there would be readily available support during IT breakdowns and similar catastrophes. The major setback for Office 365 was its overhead that needed an onsite Cloud premise, upon which Microsoft?s Exchange server was to be installed, before deploying the mail service.
In the midst of it, there were some skeptics who questioned the need to go for a campus email service, which could require resources while there exists a wide range of mail services and it would be benevolent for the users to opt one according to his/her own volition.

Cursed Glaciers

Once, during the long and cold winter nights in the Alps, people gathered around the fireplace to tell each other ancient tales or myths.

Some of these myths explain the origin or deal with the curse of glaciers. Various glaciers are said to be the results of an ancient curse: the Langgletscher in Swiss, the Marmolada in the Dolomites, the ?bergossene Alm and the Pasterze in Salzburg, the Vernagt- and Guslarferner in Tirol to mention some.

Fig.1. The Vernagtferner in 2007 (Click on the image to enlarge). Old myths tell that the glacier covers the ruins of the ancient cities of Onan? and Danan?, cursed long time ago to punish the hubris of the inhabitants.

The details differ but the general structure of the myth is very similar:? A long time ago there existed a rich city surrounded by fertile pastures where today is the glacier. Unfortunately the wealth corrupted the inhabitants and they wasted the fortune, one day they decided to use milk and bread to clean the streets of the city. When a beggar asked for a piece of bread the presumptuous inhabitants denied him this humble request. So he cursed the city, dark clouds covered the sky and heavy and persistent snow started falling in the mountains. When the sun reappeared, the city and pastures were gone, lost forever under the glacier.
Some historians suggest that this myth is based on observations of advancing glaciers during the period of the ?Little Ice Age?, a period of cooling extending in the Alps from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

There is no doubt that locals noted the variations in mass and length of glaciers, especially when the advancing glaciers extended into the valleys and threatened people or their property. In 1781 the Swiss pastor Jakob Samuel Wyttenbach noted in a report intended to investigate the dangers of glaciers:

?Could it be proven to ourselves on the available documentation that both by the progress of our ice mountains as by our misbehaviour once for pasture most suitable land is currently covered by ice?[]?

One of the most cursed glaciers in the European Alps was the Vernagtferner. This glacier is famous for its repeated advances during the Little Ice Age. The glacier was not threatening to bury alive the people (even if there exists a myth of a buried city under the glacier), but the advancing glacier obstructed repeatedly the valley of Rofen forming a dam made of ice. The meltwater of other glaciers then formed a glacial lake named ?Rofensee?.

Fig.2. The historic ?Atlas Tyrolensis? published in 1774 by cartographer Peter Anich shows the situation between 1600 and 1771, when the glacier of Vernagt blocked the valley of Rofen. The ice dam and the meltwater of other glaciers formed Lake Rofen (image in public domain).

Ice dams can be very unstable and the repeated dam failure at Lake Rofen resulted in catastrophic floods, one of the earliest documented happened in the year 1600.
The local Abraham J?ger was send a year later into the valley to report to the authorities the source of all this devastation.

?Such glacier is not as the others covered by smooth ice, but with many peaks, pools of water and fissures with strange colours, as one can not wonder enough of [this spectacle].?

For the society at the time the only explanation for the advancing glacier was the wrongdoings of witches and sorcerers. In 1678, again after a catastrophic outburst, the local Thoman J?chl was imprisoned, incriminated for bewitching the weather and executed August 8, 1680.
Between 1771 and 1772 again a lake started to form and the authorities summarized in a report the possible actions to prevent a disaster:

?The only counter measurements are the construction of a canal along the side of the valley, but also praying?[]?

It didn?t help much; chronicles reported further catastrophic floods in 1845 and 1848.

Fig.3. & 4. The advancing and retreating Vernagtferner as depicted in 1911 by artist Rudolf Reschreiter (sitting in the foreground of the drawing). Prof. S. Finsterwalder, famous geographer that compiled the first modern map of this glacier at the end of the 19th century, is surprised by the advancing Vernagtferner, however the glacier doesn?t seem to appreciate the taste of the professor (image in public domain).

Another glacier became feared for very similar reasons. Like the Vernagtferner also the Gurgler Ferner repeatedly blocked a valley and meltwater formed the glacial Lake Langthaler (or Gurgler) that experienced outbursts in 1717-1724, 1770-1774, 1845 and 1848. Here a simple but effective warning system was installed: if an outburst of the growing lake seemed inevitable, messengers were send to the people with the warning ?The glacier is coming!?

Fig.5. In this map published in 1861 by cartographer K.A. Sonklar the Lake Langthaler is depicted.? The advancing Gurgler Ferner in the principal valley forms an ice dam (image in public domain).

Fig.6. & 7. View into the Langthaler-Valley (Click on the image to enlarge), in ~1850 the principal valley in the foreground was covered by the Gurgler Ferner. At the confluence of the two valleys the glacial lake Langthaler formed. Still today the lacustrine sediments and the shorelines of the lake can be recognized in the field.

The catastrophic floods and the glaciers became so popular that in 1605 the cartographer Warmund Ygl put them on his map as ?Glacies continua et perpetua? (eternal and continuous ice), the first cartographic depiction of cursed glaciers.

a new opinion in Telecommunications about Samsung i9100 Galaxy S II

Samsung i9100 Galaxy S II

Product Type: Samsung Smartphone

Newest Review:?... happen that often and it doesn't make the phone itself bad since it might not be Samsung's fould but Android's.... more

This is my real first smart phone. Before this, I have had a touch screen phone as well, but you could barely call it that. I bought this phone with a contract so it was free, but I bought if for the phone, not the contract.
I'm really happy with my Galaxy S2. It is in a lot of ways better than an iPhone:
-The Galaxy S2 is faster the the iPhone.
-The battery is just way better than with the iPhone. I can use it up to three days, + you can get spare batteries with the Galaxy S2, you can't with the iPhone.
-The camera is better than with iPhone (8MP, Full HD film)

And I could go on like that for ages. The only disadvantage is that android isn't always working as it should be. Sometimes things happen like an app crash, or sometimes the whole phone crashes (with certain apps only). But this doesn't happen that often and it doesn't make the phone itself bad since it might not be Samsung's fould but Android's.

Summary: Great phone for all your needs!

TechCrunch-TechGrinch Was Not Impressed By Google?s ?Jingle Bells? Doodle

TechCrunch ? Warning, I?m about to get real critical of something pretty minor. It?s midnight on Christmas and the world is largely at a standstill, so pardon my rant. ~ When I visited Google.com this morning, I was as excited as the kids sprinting from bed to tree. But all I found was a lump of sonic coal. Oh joy, after months of Christmas music, I get to hear a crummy elevator music version of ?Jingle Bells? one more time? *sigh* ~ But wait, is it a game where I guess how to play the song on the colored keys? No. Can I remix it and make my own song using the tones? Nope. Can I at least share something to the legion of strangers who?ve added me to their Circles on Google+? Well there was no readily available permalink, and the metadata wasn?t changed so sharing Google.com ...More into G+ didn?t produce a doodle preview. ~ Why the high expectations? I was impressed with the Thanksgiving doodle, mostly because a special button encouraged people to share their custom turkey to Google+. Considering the fledgling social network needs users and content, I thought that was a wise move. ~ The Polish doodle the day before offered a sci-fi comic puzzle game. The Father?s Day doodle was a useful PSA to call your Dad. And the 65th birthday tribute to Queen?s Freddie Mercury was the pinacle of awesome, featuring mustachioed bears riding bicycles. Today we got a crummy elevator music ?Jingle Bells?. I would have settled ~ I would have settled for some 8-bit tones, a more expansive light show, or something actually interactive and not just triggered. In previous years, the Christmas doodles have been basic but classy. This one built me up with its shiny buttons but didn?t follow through. Maybe children were more elated. ~ Oh sorry, am I being an overly entitled TechGrinch? Normally I?m a rather loving person, this is just some?constructive criticism. I know the doodle is a delightful little service Google does out of the goodness of its 30,000 hearts. I?m sure it has plenty else to worry about and shoul... ...Less

Anglican archbishop: Bonds, trust broken in UK (AP)

LONDON ? The summer riots in Britain and the financial crisis have broken bonds and abused trust in British society, the Archbishop of Canterbury said in his Christmas Day sermon.

Archbishop Rowan Williams appealed to those congregated at Canterbury Cathedral on Sunday to learn lessons about "mutual obligation" from the events of the past year.

Citing the four days of U.K. riots and the current European debt crisis, the Archbishop said "the most pressing question" now facing Britain is "who and where we are as a society."

"Bonds have been broken, trust abused and lost," he said. "Whether it is an urban rioter mindlessly burning down a small shop that serves his community, or a speculator turning his back on the question of who bears the ultimate cost for his acquisitive adventures in the virtual reality of today's financial world, the picture is of atoms spinning apart in the dark."

Williams, leader of the world's Anglicans, also quoted from the Book of Common Prayer in his sermon to say that if offenses are against one's neighbors, one should be ready to make restitution.

Romney ignores Gingrich's taunts on ads, tax spat (AP)

BETHLEHEM, N.H. ? Mitt Romney, seemingly happy with how the Republican presidential campaign is playing out, is not explaining or apologizing for TV attack ads paid for by his allies that have damaged his chief rival's political standing 12 days before the Iowa caucuses.

Whether he's the true frontrunner or not, Romney is acting like one. He refuses to be dragged into debates about the campaign's tone, high-stakes brinkmanship in Congress over a payroll tax dispute ? or into a one-on-one debate sought by Newt Gingrich.

The former Massachusetts governor on Thursday shrugged off Gingrich's complaints about the ads and Romney's reluctance to weigh in on the political standoff over extending payroll tax cuts, which lawmakers late in the day appeared to be resolving just in time to head off a hit on workers' paychecks Jan. 1.

. Gingrich, the former House speaker, has repeatedly called on Romney to face him before cameras and defend the ads, which are largely financed by a heavily bankrolled group friendly to Romney.

"We've had many occasions to debate together, and we'll have more, I presume quite a few more, before this is finished," Romney told The Associated Press. "But I'm not going to narrow this down to a two-person race while there are still a number of other candidates that are viable."

Some party insiders expect a strong showing in the lead-off Iowa caucuses Jan. 3 by libertarian-leaning Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. But they generally see Gingrich, a prominent GOP figure for more than 30 years, as having the best chance to compete with Romney for weeks or months.

Gingrich and Romney planned to campaign through Friday, underscoring the stakes for both candidates even as the pace by the crowded field began to lighten for the Christmas weekend. The barrage of ads, though, kept up in Iowa and New Hampshire both.

In a sign of his late organizing start, Gingrich spent Thursday in Virginia, scrambling to secure the 10,000 voter signatures he needs to get on the state's March 6 primary ballot. It cost him a precious day of campaigning in Iowa and in New Hampshire, which holds its primary Jan. 10.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been by far the heaviest spender in Iowa. However, his campaign this week gave 30-day termination notices to all political consultants in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Aides said the campaign was moving towards fiscal discipline as it prepares for a long multistate strategy.

But even in states that vote early, political consultants rarely receive such notices. Some are usually retained with an eye toward the general election, or sent to other states.

Gingrich renewed his call for Romney to condemn or defend ads sponsored in Iowa by a so-called super PAC. It's run by Romney supporters who are legally barred from coordinating with the official campaign.

Romney, interviewed during his bus tour of New Hampshire, didn't take the bait.

"Could I come out and speak about ads, generally, and speak about positive ads and negative ads?" Romney asked. "Of course, that's available to everybody. But I'm not in any way coordinating the ads or the approach that's taken by the super PAC."

Gingrich scoffed at the explanation, saying Romney could easily condemn the ads without breaking campaign finance laws.

"It tells you a lot about Governor Romney," Gingrich told reporters in Richmond, Va. "I'm happy to go all over Iowa and point out that he doesn't mind hiding out behind millions of dollars of negative ads, but he doesn't want to defend them. The ads are false."

Ads showing in Iowa accuse Gingrich of supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants, and remind voters of his 1998 ethics problems in Congress, which involved his paying at $300,000 penalty. More subtle ads tout Romney's 42-year-long marriage, an indirect swipe at Gingrich's two messy divorces.

Gingrich said some ads dealing with abortion are inaccurate. Iowans will not reward "falsehoods by millionaires," he said.

Despite such remarks, Gingrich has vowed to stay positive. It's a decision partly driven by his inability to match Romney, Rep. Ron Paul and Texas Gov. Rick Perry with heavy ad buys.

Some prominent Republicans came to Romney's defense. Former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu, a Romney supporter, said he's getting tired of Gingrich's "whining."

And former President George H.W. Bush told the Houston Chronicle that Romney is the best choice for president. "I like Perry, but he doesn't seem to be going anywhere," Bush said.

Romney also dissociated himself anew from the debate in Washington over a proposed two-month extension of a cut in payroll taxes.

"I really don't think it's productive for me to describe which of all of the compromises within the sausage-making process is my favorite compromise position," Romney said, refusing to go "deep in the weeds."

Gingrich responded: "If you're a candidate for president and you're not prepared to talk about the hottest issue right now which affects every single working American ? there's a concept called leadership. And people sometimes think that I'm too aggressive, but at least I lead."

"I think there's a timidity of calculation," Gingrich said. "I suspect some candidates have had consultants say `Oh, don't take any risks.'"

Afterward, GOP aides said House Republican leaders, in a retreat from the position Gingrich favored, agreed to a two-month extension of Social Security payroll tax cuts and federal unemployment benefits. They had been holding out for a one-year extension, at the cost of getting nothing passed.

Some of Gingrich's and Romney's rivals rolled through Iowa on long bus tours. Rep. Michele Bachmann, stretched thin as she tries to visit all 99 counties, planned 10 visits Thursday before taking a brief break for Christmas. With her voice failing, she relied on supporters to make the case for her as she walked around diners and restaurants, whispering greetings to her fans in rural Iowa.

Perry stopped at two meet-and-greets with Iowa caucus-goers, many of whom remain undecided. He also attended a town hall-style meeting near Des Moines before returning to Texas for the holidays. While Perry has struggled to regain his one-time frontrunner mantle, his ads have blanketed Iowa and have helped paint him as a conservative alternative to Romney and Gingrich.

Perry's campaign has spent $4.4 million on TV ads in Iowa ? twice as much as any other candidate there ? and $234,000 in New Hampshire. The super PAC behind Perry, Make Us Great Again, has spent an additional $200,000 on Iowa TV this week, bringing its total to more than $1.65 million.

Paul is also spending heavily in Iowa. His campaign spent about $500,000 on Iowa TV this week, bringing its total to about $2.2 million. The Romney-friendly super PAC, Restore Our Future, has spent almost $2.8 million in Iowa, largely on ads hitting Gingrich.

Gingrich aimed his sharpest barbs Thursday at President Barack Obama. He blamed the president for the impasse over the payroll tax, said a two-month extension made no sense and commented that the political squabbling makes the U.S. look "like Italy on a bad day."

In typically bombastic style, Gingrich said of Obama, "everything he believes in kills jobs," and called him "the best food stamp president."

"I studied history, and unlike the president, I studied American history," Gingrich said at a breakfast of about 200 Republicans, all of whom were asked to sign his ballot petition.

Cricket Fight Club: Winning Increases Aggression

It?s better than an ant farm. It?s more exciting than a flea circus. Welcome to Cricket Fight Club. The first rule of Cricket Fight Club is: you do not talk about Cricket Fight Club. The second rule of Cricket Fight Club is: you do not talk about Cricket Fight Club.

In aggressive conflicts between individuals of the same species throughout the animal kingdom, losers become less aggressive while winners become more aggressive. In turn, winners become more likely to win subsequent fights, even against new opponents.

Why does this occur? One recent line of evidence (based on research in fish and mice) suggests that social conflicts result in an increase in testosterone levels, which in turn results in competitive behavior and aggression. The problem with this hypothesis is that the winner effect has been observed in both invertebrates as well as in vertebrates, which have very different physiological systems. Something other than testosterone might be responsible for the winner effect.

In order to investigate the source of the heightened aggression that results from the winner effect, researchers Jan Rillich and Paul Anthony Stevenson staged ?tournaments? of cricket fights, using Mediterranean field crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus). They set up a series of fights, with rest periods between fights that lasted either five minutes or twenty minutes.

The general pattern went something like this: first, two fight-inexperienced, weight-matched adult male crickets were allowed to fight. The winners from those fights were matched for a second round of fighting, and the round two winners participated in a third round. In addition to measuring how long each fight lasted (in seconds), the researchers measured how aggressive the encounters were, using the a scale from zero (avoidance) to six (full-contact wrestling).

When the inter-fight interval was limited to five minutes, they found that round three fights lasted longer (11 seconds) than round two fights (8 seconds), which were longer than round one fights (6 seconds). In addition, round three fights escalated to higher aggression levels, on average, than round one and two fights.

What was particularly interesting, however, was that these effects disappeared when the inter-fight interval was extended to twenty minutes. In other words, the ?winner effect? did not hold when there was a longer time to wait between fights.

And not only that. while round three fights were not significantly different from round one and two fights for crickets within the twenty minutes condition, there was a significant difference between conditions: round three fights in the twenty minute condition were significantly shorter and less aggressive than round three fights in the five minute condition.

At this point, you might ask whether the observed effects were possibly the result of fighting, per se, and not the result of winning those fights. The researchers wondered the same thing, so they conducted two more experiments. In the first, tournaments were conducted such that the crickets would fight, but the fights were broken up before there was a clear winner. In other words, it was fighting-without-winning. In the second, tournaments were conducted which paired fight-inexperienced crickets with previous losers, since the losers were more likely to retreat, and forfeit the match. In other words, it was winning-without-fighting. When comparing the results, the researchers discovered that winning-without-fighting maintained the previously observed winner effect, while fighting-without-winning did not (more specifically, though it did result in longer fight duration, there was not an increase in aggressiveness). This means that it the winning of a fight that is critical to the winner effect, not simply aggressive behavior. Aggression did not beget aggression in the absence of a win.

Now that they had established that the winner effect only holds when there is a short inter-fight interval, and that the winner effect is the result of winning rather than fighting itself, the next step was to determine its physiological basis. They staged another round of tournaments, all including the five minute rest period between fights. This time, however, they treated the crickets with one of four types of neurochemicals (or a placebo, for the control group), each of which was known to block certain types of receptors in the nervous systems of insects.

The control group, as expected, displayed the same winner effect that was seen in the first experiment. In addition, three of the four neurochemicals with which the crickets were dosed had no effect on cricket aggression. For all three treatments, the winner effect was maintained. The fourth neurochemical epinastine, which blocks the effects of octopamine did have an effect: not only was the winner effect abolished, but when comparing the round three fights with the control group?s round three fights, they were less aggressive and shorter in duration.

Taken together, these results show two important things.

First, that the increased aggressiveness seen after winning earlier fights is transient: the winner effect is seen when fights are separated by five minute rest periods, but not for twenty minute intervals.

Second, these experiments show that the winner effect is driven by a neurochemical called octopamine, which is the invertebrate version of norepinephrine, and part of the adrenaline system.

This leaves just one question: why did these researchers choose to study aggression in crickets in the first place? Simply put, concepts such as reward and motivation can be extremely complicated. The researchers argue, therefore, if we wish to understand ?how concepts such as reward and motivation can be encoded in the nervous system,? it makes sense to use a ?presumably non-conscious animal.?

There is, after all, a long history of investigating complex mental processes in simple nervous systems. For example, much of what we know about the molecular basis of memory comes from the study of the sea slug, Aplysia californica.

To that end, insects seem to be ideal critters for studying this sort of reward-associated hyper-aggression.

PASTOR BEATS WOMAN AT CHURCH - Claims he was exorcising demons within her

Members of a church in northern St Catherine say they are very upset about an incident last Sunday when their pastor beat a church member with a macka stick to exorcise demons.

The woman, a teacher, is said to have been beaten with the stick and a Bible after the pastor began walking up and down and then decided to exorcise the demons within her.

A member of the church told THE WEEKEND STAR that the pastor came from the altar with other elders and first began beating the woman in the face with the Bible.

It is alleged that the woman normally suffers from depression and was receiving counselling for her problems.

One member said, "Mi cah believe how the woman get beat suh bad, and the pastor deh nuh easy. A Bellevue him fi guh, cause a him mad."

The source further said that the pastor had commented before the incident that; "I plan to beat someone in church today. Me a bad man fi God and mi nuh fraid a nobody."

He is said to have then pro-ceeded to beat her in the face with the Bible and the stick.

Attempts by THE WEEKEND STAR to speak to the woman proved futile and we were told by a friend that she was too embarrassed to speak about the incident

An ordained minister, however, when questioned about such incidents said that it's not usually done in the church denomination in which it occurred; "But this has happened before. There was a case that I am aware of, where a leader used a piece of board to beat one member said to be demon possessed unconscious and the person actually died."

He further said, "However, the persons intentions were possibly honourable but it can still end badly. These things come out of rivalist traditions, but human interest must always be protected."

Stocks end trading higher after good jobless news

By msnbc.com staff and wire services

?

The stock market rallied for a third day Thursday, buoyed by news that weekly jobless claims had dropped to their lowest level since April. The report provides hope the job market is improving.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial average ended trading 61.84 higher, or 0.51 percent, to 12,169.58. The S&P 500 rose 10.28, or 0.83 percent, to 1,254.00. The Nasdaq was up 21.48, or 0.83 percent, to 2,599.45.

Quincy Krosby, chief market strategist for Prudential Securities, said the reports show that the economy has "grudgingly continued on a positive path." Krosby also said the economy needs to grow at a faster pace than 2 percent to be able to survive any shocks caused by the European debt crisis or a sharp slowdown in China's economy in 2012.

The government lowered its estimate of U.S. economic growth in the July-September quarter to an annual rate of 1.8 percent from 2 percent. That was still the fastest growth this year, up from 1.3 percent in the April-June quarter.

Economists think the improving job market, strong holiday shopping, and cheaper gas prices will leave consumers with more money to spend. That would get the economy growing at an annual rate of more than 3 percent in the final three months of this year, which would be the fastest pace since 3.8 percent growth in the spring of 2010.

Banks and technology stocks were the largest gainers, while utilities and consumer goods companies traded lower.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Thinner Brains Could Signal Alzheimer's, Study Suggests (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) -- New research suggests that the outer edges of the brain are thinner in older people who may be destined to develop Alzheimer's disease, but there's currently no way to use the information to help people fend off dementia.

Still, the findings could help researchers test Alzheimer's medications by allowing them to track the progression of the disease, said study co-author Dr. Brad Dickerson, an associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School.

Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Alzheimer's Association, and the number of deaths has risen in recent years. There's no cure for the disease.

In the new study, researchers focused on the thickness of the edges of the brain, known as the cortex. "We're looking at the parts of the cortex that are particularly vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease, parts that are important for memory, problem-solving skills and higher-language functions," Dickerson said.

Previous research found that several areas of the cortex were smaller in people with dementia from Alzheimer's. "It's like an orange that's shriveling. The thickness of the outer skin might get thinner as it dries out," Dickerson said.

In the new study, researchers examined the MRI brain scans of 159 people with an average age of 76; about half were men. Three years later, the participants took tests designed to measure how their brains were functioning.

The findings appear in the Dec. 21 online issue of the journal Neurology.

The 15 percent of participants with the thinnest brain areas performed the worst on the tests: About one in five of them experienced cognitive decline. They also showed increases in signs of abnormal spinal fluid, a possible sign of developing Alzheimer's disease.

"That suggests they may be developing symptoms," Dickerson said.

A lower number -- 7 percent -- of the participants in the middle range of brain thinness experienced cognitive decline. None of the people with the least thin brain areas developed problems.

So are the scans appropriate as tools to figure out whether patients are on the road to Alzheimer's?

Cost doesn't appear to be a major challenge at this point. It's not clear how much the MRI scans might cost at doctor's offices, Dickerson said. However, they're only a few hundred dollars each in the research world.

Also, many older people already receive MRI scans of the brain for other reasons, said Dr. Raj Shah, medical director of the Rush Memory Clinic, in Chicago.

But with no cure for Alzheimer's, the best use for the scans will be to help researchers figure out if medications work, Dickerson said.

Cathy Roe, an assistant professor of neurology at the Knight Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis, said the findings could have value down the line. "Right now, there is not much we can do to delay the progression of dementia," said Roe, who's familiar with the findings. "But once effective treatments are identified, this research could help to identify which patients should receive that treatment and when they should receive it."

Rebel China villagers demand elections, turn to central leaders (Reuters)

WUKAN, China (Reuters) ? Protesting Chinese villagers on Sunday demanded that central leaders defuse grievances about what they called crooked land deals and a suspicious death, as a revolt that has tested Communist Party authority in this semi-rural area neared its second week.

Residents of Wukan Village in Guangdong province have driven off officials, erected makeshift barricades to deter police, and held protest gatherings and marches daily after the death in custody last weekend of Xue Jinbo, one of the organisers of a months-long campaign over former farmland that residents say was illegally seized for commercial development

Xue's death, which officials said was caused by heart failure, triggered visceral anger among the village's 10,000 residents, who believe he was abused by police.

On Sunday evening, residents vowed to take their protests into a second week unless central officials step in.

"We've completely lost trust in the local government," said one villager, a 35-year-old surnamed Wu. "They've said they will solve our problems, but it's all lies. They've cheated the ordinary people."

"We hope that the central government will give us justice," said another villager, surnamed Lin.

Police appear to be exerting their own pressure by blocking trucks from taking food into Wukan.

The swirling sentiments of the Wukan villagers -- mixing fury at the local government with hopes directed at Beijing -- underscored the volatility of the dispute and the difficulty that any officials will have in regaining their trust.

"Collusion between government and business, give me back my home," declared one of the many handwritten banners strung across the village square. "Democratic elections are the heartfelt voice of the people."

LAND AT HEART OF STANDOFF

Rural land in China is mostly owned in name by village collectives, which are in theory under leaders elected by residents. But in fact, higher officials can mandate seizing for development in return for compensation, which residents often say is inadequate and does not reflect the profits reaped.

The government of Shanwei, the area including Wukan, said this week that some Communist Party members and officials accused of misdeeds over the disputed land were detained and that the main land development project had been suspended.

But villagers' fury has turned to Xue's death and demands that officials return his body to the grieving family.

Wukan, with its clannish unity and big stake in rising land values, is an example of the kind of slow-burning discontent that is corroding party power at the grassroots.

Residents say hundreds of hectares of land was acquired unfairly by corrupt officials in collusion with developers. Anger in the village boiled over in September this year after repeated appeals to higher officials. Residents ransacked a government office and skirmished with police.

Protests and other bursts of what officials call "mass unrest" have risen with China's rapid economic transformation and urbanisation, which has consumed farmland, often sparking contention over compensation.

"Land is the last public good in China that can be privatized. Local governments need the land to get money to run the governments and second, local officials take the land to fill their pockets, so it's both of these issues," said David Zweig, a professor who studies Chinese politics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

"This problem used to happen more in the suburbs because as urbanisation expanded, they needed the land. But now it seems to be happening all over the country."

Between 1993 and recent years, the number of recorded "mass incidents" grew from 8,700 to about 90,000, according to most experts. Some estimates go higher.

Conflicts over land requisitions accounted for more than 65 percent of rural mass incidents, the China Economic Times reported earlier this year, citing survey data.

But most of these flare-ups are briefer and smaller than Wukan's, and do not attract the same international attention.

China's state-controlled media have reported sporadically on the protests, only citing official statements, and checks for "Wukan" on popular microblogging sites have been blocked, reflecting official wariness about spreading news about the confrontation.

Xue's eldest daughter Xue Jianwan, in an interview published this week by an online Hong Kong magazine, said there were signs of bruising and physical abuse on her father's body. Officials said doctors found the apparent bruising was caused by blood settling after his death, said the official Xinhua news agency.

The daughter, Jianwan, also said authorities refused initially to tell the family where her father had been taken, asking only later for his medical records.

Hugh Hefner Talks Spicing Up Lindsay Lohan's Playboy Reshoot (omg!)

Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson and Playboy's Hugh Hefner, December 15, 2011 -- Access Hollywood

Lindsay Lohan's Playboy issue hit newsstands today and Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson caught up with Hugh Hefner to get the details on the actress' Marilyn Monroe-inspired shoot. Hef says the tribute was a last-minute choice after he was disappointed with what the photographer first shot with Lindsay.

"I saw the results of the first day of shooting and it was not what I was looking for," Hef told Shaun in an interview at the Playboy Mansion on Thursday. "[Lindsay] hadn't bared it all in the first one and she looked like she had just come out of rehab... She looked like she just got up in the morning.

PLAY IT NOW: Why Is Hugh Hefner ?Concerned? For Ex-Fiance Crystal Harris?

"I wanted her to do something that would be truly unforgettable," he added.

Inside the pages of Playboy, Lilo's poses are nearly identical to those of Marilyn's iconic 1953 spread in the men's mag. While Lindsay was on board for the reshoot, her handlers -- at first -- were not, because this time she would be fully nude.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Hugh Hefner: Hollywood?s Original Playboy

"They wanted a little more clothing and I said, 'You know, this is going to be what it's going to be, because we're doing a tribute here to the original nudes,'" Hef explained.

"Marilyn Monroe's comment after the original shoot was, when they asked what she was wearing, [she] said, 'All I had on was the radio.' All Lindsay Lohan had on during this was the radio!"

When asked if the actress arrived to the photo shoot on time, the Playboy magnate wasn't able to provide an answer, but said if she was truly channeling Marilyn, punctuality would not be one of her strongest points.

"I don't know the answer to that, [but] if she's doing a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, I assume that means she probably didn't show up on time because Marilyn didn't show up on time," he told Shaun.

"Marilyn was late also?" Shaun asked.

"Oh yes, with regularity," Hef answered.

Despite the unauthorized, premature release of Lindsay's pictorial, Hef still has high hopes for the issue.

"I think you can count on it," he told Shaun, when asked if he believes Lindsay's issue will be a bestseller. "The publicity surrounding it and the anticipation is remarkable."

Etta James Songs: 'At Last,' 'Dance With Me Henry' & More (LISTEN)

Etta James's doctors announced on Friday that she is terminally ill with cancer. Her songs, however, will last forever.

A six-time Grammy-winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, James put out a long string of all-time classic hits over a career that stretched over 50 years. She experienced a series of ups and downs, both personal and professional, but from her first hit, 1955's "The Wallflower (Dance with Me, Henry)" to a flurry of 60s smashes that included "Spoonful," "All I Could Do Was Cry," the iconic "At Last," and "Something's Got a Hold on Me," James secured her legacy as one of the greats.
