Former Iran president urges release of all political prisoners

DUBAI (Reuters) - Reformist former president Mohammad Khatami called for all political prisoners in Iran to be freed following a decision to pardon 80 people in an easing of the Islamic Republic's strict security policies.

The pardons were in keeping with moderate President Hassan Rouhani's pledge to loosen a repressive security grip that Iranians say has been prevalent since the 2009 re-election of his hardline conservative predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In comments published on his official website, Mohammad Khatami, who was president from 1997 to 2005, welcomed the pardons announced on Monday but said they did not go far enough.

"I am happy about this news but I say why this number? I should say all, unless someone has truly committed a crime and has been found guilty in a competent court. Many of them haven't done anything; many of the charges were wrong," Khatami said.

Given that he is an influential voice among moderates, his call will add to the weight of expectation on Rouhani to push for the release of more political prisoners and two top opposition leaders under house arrest for more than two years.

On Monday, judiciary spokesman Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei said the 80 pardoned included some arrested over major unrest that erupted after Ahmadinejad's re-election, which opposition leaders say was rigged, a charge the authorities deny.

Without naming them, Khatami appeared also to call on authorities to free two opposition leaders, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi, who have been under house arrest for over two years over what authorities refer to as "the 2009 sedition".

"Everyone should make efforts for house arrests to be lifted," said Khatami, whose reformist constituency helped Rouhani pull off a landslide election victory in June. "Steps should be taken in this direction."

Earlier this week, Rouhani addressed the U.N. General Assembly for the first time, setting out his vision of a diplomatic thaw between the Islamic Republic and the West, in particular over Tehran's contested nuclear program.

The West suspects Iran is seeking the capability to develop a nuclear weapon, whereas the Islamic Republic says it is enriching uranium solely for civilian energy purposes.

Since Rouhani took office on August 3, the house arrest conditions for Mousavi and Karoubi are reported to have eased through better access to doctors and more family visits.

Last week Iranian authorities freed human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, who was regarded by civic groups as Iran's highest profile political prisoner, and at least 10 other prominent detainees.

In an interview with Reuters, Sotoudeh said she believed Karoubi and Mousavi would be freed soon as well.

As president, Khatami sought to improve social and political freedoms for Iranians but was repeatedly thwarted by hardline conservatives powerful within Iran's complex power structure.

He endorsed Rouhani's candidacy for president a few days before the election in June, bringing with him a large number of voters eager for liberalization.

Self-Storage Operators Use Text Messaging to Communicate More ...

Omni-channel communication thru SiteLink offers a competitive edge, delivers messages faster and improves read rates.

Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) September 23, 2013

SiteLink, the leader in self-storage management software worldwide, introduces text messaging to storage operators as the latest means to communicate with tenants, staff and leads. As more managers and owners look for innovative solutions to improve tenant communication and streamline collections, SiteLink delivers.

SiteLink has added seamless text messaging of notices and alerts to other existing communication options including HTML emailing, electronic document signing and storing, robo-calling and print outsourcing. Text messaging complements existing communication and delivers results where email and other methods may fail to reach tenants or lack responses.

?Consumers are searching for, reserving and actually renting storage utilizing their mobile devices more than ever. Unfortunately typical emails often aren?t able to be read in time,? said Markus Hecker, SiteLink?s COO. ?SiteLink?s text messaging capabilities improve delivery speeds and read rates.?

Studies indicate that desktop computers will soon be replaced by mobile devices for researching and shopping including self-storage. Text messages ranging from birthday wishes to collection notices reaches tenants on their mobile devices, the method of choice to communicate. Mobile behavior research shows most consumers respond to a text message in 90 seconds compared to taking 90 minutes to reply to emails, on average.

?The results of integrated text messaging are instant and easy to measure,? said Gene Klemens, an SMS Resources? owner. ?On average, texting reduces the time to collect from delinquent tenants and lowers the number of past-due accounts noticeably. Storage owners enhance not just collections, but also customer relations by sending alerts marking anniversaries, maintenance and other events. Texting also allows them to reclaim a significant number of staff man-hours that might be spent in other collection efforts; thus getting more return and productivity on-site.?

SMS Resources seamlessly integrates SiteLink Web Edition and the SNA Collections Manager program to boost collections, reduce bad debt and lower time to process delinquent accounts.

About SiteLink:

With more than 7,000 installations worldwide, SiteLink Web Edition is one of the industry?s most popular software programs. Quality service, updates and user-friendly design make Web Edition a favorite of single- and multi-store operators alike. More than 70 of top 100 operators run Web Edition today. Regular, automatic updates deliver integrations with technology partners like RPOST, Late 2 Lien and DocuSign. Web Edition is highly scalable and easy to deploy. SiteLink does not bundle services and lowers operating costs by giving owners a choice in partners like web designers and credit card processors. At no additional charge, Web Edition integrates with platforms like smart phones, websites, listing services, INSOMNIAC KIOSKS and central mail providers. Powerful features like revenue management, built-in CRM, email and text messaging grow revenue and lower the cost of owning software.

DeLauro to endorse Toni Harp for mayor

Source: yaledailynews.com --- Sunday, September 22, 2013
Nearly two weeks after clinching the democratic nomination to be the next Mayor of New Haven, Toni Harp ARC ?78 will receive yet another endorsement from a major player in the city?s politics. Longtime Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro plans to endorse Harp during a ?Democratic Unity Rally? in Wooster Square Monday afternoon. DeLauro, who withheld from endorsing any candidate during the four-way democratic primary, is one of the most significant figures in the New Haven community, having held her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1991. DeLauro is only the latest in a long string of establishment endorsements for Harp, which have included Gov. Dannel Malloy, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy and State Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney. One of the most progressive members of the House of Representatives, DeLauro grew up in Wooster Square. City politicians frequently seek her support, given her immense popularity in the city. And although Harp has sought to distance herself from Mayor John DeStefano, Jr.?s administration, DeLauro maintains close ties to the 20-year Mayor. The Congresswoman introduced DeStefano at his retirement announcement earlier this year. DeLauro?s mother, Luisa DeLauro, served on the Board of Aldermen. ...

Why Personal Training Is Worth The Price | global record

Copyright (c) 2013 Sylvia Nasser

Seeking for Personal Training can be little more expensive than signing up for gym membership. An average gym membership costs $70 per month while personal training costs at an average of $40 per hour. Though the latter costs more, you cannot undermine the quality you are to experience simply because personal training gives more direction than that of membership training. It matches its program design to a client's particular need. Its programs are developed based on how the client's body responds to training unlike the one-size-fits-all practice offered by large gyms. Besides, there really is no price tag in taking care of one's fitness and health.

Under a personal training, your trainer will not only create a specific regimen for you but will intensively work to achieve your fitness goals with you. One exercise cannot be independent of the other exercises. Each of them must complement each other in achieving strength, flexibility and balance. If you are worried about costs, you can hire a trainer for an 8 to 12 week workout session and once goals are met, you can reduce the number of sessions you train. Another benefit of having a personal trainer is that you will be well taken care of. A licensed personal trainer is one who had attended workshops related to safe physical training and passed the necessary certification tests through an NCCA's accredited organization. Though it is not a requirement and it is something that a starting personal trainer could learn, and a more experienced trainer would know, it is always best to hire someone that is working with a certified sports dietician and not just someone that tackle
s diet concerns boldly when the truth is that nutrition is outside his scope of expertise. It is a catch but not hard to find.

It is true if the trainer has their own studio. Getting a In Home Personal Training can be accomplished by all ages, regardless of race, gender or status in life. As each client would have different goals, different disciplines such as weight management, specific sport training, yoga, pilates, kick boxing, etc. are also in place for clients to choose from. Old school methods like browsing yellow pages, still works fine in this day and age. You can also use the Web. Check fitness related sites and look for the most reviewed personal training services online and start looking for the nearest fitness camp and/or personal trainer from your home or workplace.

Syria details part of chemical arsenal, more to come

By Anthony Deutsch and Oliver Holmes

THE HAGUE/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria gave details of some of its chemical weapons to the OPCW arms watchdog at The Hague on Friday but needs to fill in gaps by next week to launch a rapid disarmament operation that may avert U.S. air strikes.

At the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the U.N.-backed agency which is to oversee the removal of President Bashar al-Assad's arsenal, a spokeswoman said: "We have received part of the verification and we expect more."

She did not say what was missing from a document one U.N. diplomat described as "quite long". The OPCW'S 41-member Executive Council is due to meet early next week to review Syria's inventory and to agree on implementing last week's U.S.-Russian deal to eliminate the entire arsenal in nine months.

The timetable was set down by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov a week ago in Geneva when they set aside sharp differences over Syria to agree on a plan to deprive Assad of chemical weapons and so remove the immediate threat from Washington of launching military action.

That plan set a rough deadline of Saturday for Syria to give a full account of the weapons it possesses. Security experts say it has about 1,000 tonnes of mustard gas, VX and sarin - the nerve agent U.N. inspectors found after hundreds were killed by poison following missile strikes on rebel-held areas on August 21.

One Western diplomat warned on Friday that a failure by Assad to account for all the suspected stockpile would cause world powers to seek immediate action at the United Nations Security Council to force Damascus to comply.

If there were gaps in the documentation, the diplomat said, "this matter is going to go straight to the Security Council".

The United States and its allies said the U.N. inspectors' report this week left no doubt Assad's forces were responsible for the August 21 killings. Assad, however, has blamed the rebels and Moscow says the evidence of responsibility is unclear.

The Syrian government has accepted the plan and has already sought to join the OPCW. For Assad, the Russian proposal to remove chemical weapons provided an unexpected reprieve from the military action which President Barack Obama had planned after the August 21 attack. For Obama, it solved a dilemma posed when he found Congress unwilling to support war on Syria.

Once the OPCW executive has voted to follow the Lavrov-Kerry plan in a meeting expected early next week, the Security Council is due to give its endorsement of the arrangements - marking a rare consensus after two years of East-West deadlock over Syria.

However, Russia, which has as veto, remains opposed to attempts by Western powers to have the Security Council write in an explicit and immediate threat of penalties - under what are known as Chapter VII powers. It wants to discuss ways of forcing Syrian compliance only in the event Damascus fails to cooperate.

Obama has warned that he is still prepared to attack Syria, even without a U.N. mandate, if Assad reneges on the deal.

REBEL TROUBLES

Syria's rebels, who have been fighting to end four decades of Assad family rule since 2011, have voiced dismay at the U.S.-Russian pact and accuse their Western allies of being sidetracked by the chemical weapons issue while Assad's forces use a large conventional arsenal to try to crush the revolt.

That may see the official opposition look more to its Arab and Turkish supporters for help.

It may also hamper Western - and Russian - efforts to bring the warring parties together for a peace conference. Moscow and Washington have said progress on removing chemical weapons could pave the way for a broader diplomatic effort to end a conflict that has killed well over 100,000 and destabilized the region.

The increasing bitterness of the fighting, especially along sectarian lines, and also a fragmentation into rival camps, particularly on the rebel side, will also hamper negotiations.

On Friday, al Qaeda-linked fighters and a unit of Syrian rebels declared a truce after two days of clashes near the Turkish frontier that highlight divisions in the opposition, in which hard line groups are powerful.

Assad's army, backed by Shi'ite regional power Iran and dominated by officers from Assad's Alawite religious minority, has mobilized militia and fighters from the Lebanese Shi'ite militant group Hezbollah. Alawites are a Shi'ite offshoot.

Most rebels are from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority. But factions have split as foreign fighters driven by jihad have flocked to the country, often at odds with local Syrians. Ethnic Kurds in the north have fought both sides.

Fighters from an al Qaeda affiliate, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fought with the Northern Storm Brigade, a group that controls the border.

While some tensions stem from contrasting ideological outlooks, most rebel-on-rebel fighting is more about control of territory and the spoils of war.

In other parts of Syria, al Qaeda affiliated forces have enticed rebels to join them. Hundreds of rebels, including entire brigades, have pledged allegiance to ISIL and its domestic branch the Nusra Front in northern and eastern Syria, activists and Islamist sources said on Friday.

Washington says the chemical weapons deal has restarted talk of a second peace conference in Geneva. The first round of peace talks in June 2012 failed to end hostilities, but its supporters say it created the framework for an eventual settlement.

Last year's Geneva agreement aimed to create a transitional government with full executive powers agreed by both the Damascus administration and the opposition, which is represented by the Syrian National Coalition, a council of political exiles who work with the Western-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA).

But the plan leaves out major players on the ground whose role has grown since. Pro-Assad militias, Kurdish militant groups, al Qaeda-linked rebels and other Islamist brigades that do not pledge allegiance to the FSA are not part of the deal.

"Let's be clear on this, Geneva 2 will not stabilize Syria," said Lebanon-based political scientist Hilal Khashan. "It will open a new chapter in the Syria conflict."

He said that even if the SNC and the government agreed on a transition government, jihadist groups will continue to fight and Kurdish militants will seek autonomy.

Khawla Mattar, spokeswoman for U.N. Syrian envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, said that the onus is on the SNC to be representative of Syrian society: "The Coalition ... have to bring the widest representation of Syrian society."

(AP) ? "Let's go, men! Go in, toward martyrdom," police Gen. Nabil Farrag, a pistol in one hand and a walkie-talkie in the other, exhorted his men Thursday morning as they prepared to storm a town held by Islamic militants outside Cairo.

Seconds later, a barrage of gunfire came from nearby rooftops in the town of Kerdasa onto the police and troops deployed on a highway overpass. The troops, and a group of journalists with them, threw themselves to the ground. There was little cover on the exposed overpass as the bullets flew around them on all directions.

Ahmed Abdel Fattah, an Egyptian photographer working with The Associated Press, saw Farrag lying face down on the asphalt and called over to him.

"General, come this way for protection," he shouted. Then he saw Farrag's scarlet face and his heavy breathing, and Abdel-Fattah realized the general had been hit.

It took several minutes for the fire to ease enough for policemen, some in plainclothes, to rush to the side of their commander. They stripped off his flak jacket and saw blood spreading in Farrag's white uniform. He had been hit on the right side, under his arm. They carried Farrag to a military vehicle, loaded him in and drove off to a hospital.

The Interior Ministry later reported that Farrag, the deputy security chief of Cairo's sister city Giza, had died.

Meanwhile, troops began firing back as the journalists crawled for 30 meters (yards) for cover. Security forces moved into Kerdasa, exchanging fire with militants as they conducted house-to-house searches in an operation aimed at uprooting Islamic hard-liners who took control of the town after the July ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Here's a gallery of Abdel Fattah's images showing Farrag's shooting:

Wearable Computing Revolution Draws Big Players

Wearable Computing Revolution Draw Big Players

The wearable computing revolution was expected to draw in big players into the fray. Last week, tech players like Apple, Google, Samsung and Qualcomm that predicted to spotlight their aces at the last minute are massively missing the wearable devices? movement!

Wearable computing adoption

Wearable computing will unfold a world of new gadgets, some of which are now in the development stages. Early adopters are people in the fitness and health niche, a market segment where many are willing to spend extensively for brand new gadgets.

Health wristwatch, bracelets and fitness bands monitor pulse rate, temperature and level of activity, time lapse, distance, and data all stored for measurement of changes. For some users, wearable self-monitoring gadgets are less complicated, and the data can be easily shared for medical diagnostic and fitness tracking.

Wearable computing new front-runners

Wearable computing technology will ultimately evolve into broader applications like personal information management with compatible artificial intelligence components and will appeal to a greater number of people, including the business sector. These new front-runners will overshadow early adopters in health and fitness niche.

The technology crystal ball shows us a future consisting of wearable devices integrated into clothing. The Sony Smart Bluetooth Handset SBH52 clip-on gadget has an FM radio and can be used as a phone as well as transmit and receive audio from any Bluetooth-enabled device.

Wearable computers

Future innovations in wearable computers will see them nicely sewn and worn into clothing, shoes, socks or hats. Manufacturers are now producing video clips to give us a glimpse into their own versions.

For technology pundits and market analysts alike, the week ended on a sour note. They?re wondering whether the wearable computing revolution has fizzled out.

UK?s Visiongain predicts that wearable devices represent a $4.6 billion market in 2013 alone.

ABI Research predicts that sports and health gadget markets alone will ship 170 million wearable devices by 2017.

Apple did release a gizmo, the iPhone 5s with the M7 coprocessor and motion sensor that would win the fitness and health tracker market. Still, they think that was a lackluster move for Apple, after it was rumored to be secretly developing a smartwatch. Obviously, the iPhone manufacturer was fending off threats to its flank by releasing the iPhone 5s rather than venture out into the uncertain wearable devices? market.

Issues with wearable computing marketability

Here are some of the issues affecting the key measurements of the wearable computing marketability.

Social acceptability. Many individuals disdain wearing watches these days.

Fashion statement. Not too many people are keen about wearing Google glass.

Utility. There?s not much difference about what smartwatches can do that an iPhone can?t.

Convenience. Digging for the smartphone in your pocket is a breeze.

What?s making waves in the wearable computing movement now

As big tech players seem to be reluctantly holding off releases of wearable computing products, an upstart player is making a sizable splash in the market.

Pebble smartwatch became an unlikely tech device wonder and initially sold $4.3 in just a few days and another $1 million the following day before the product even reached the market shelves last year. It is still going strong today. The product has several variants that sell like hot cakes.

Ironically, Pebble smartwatch is the only smartwatch on the market that supports the number-one smartphone, iPhone, by Apple.

Why We Like Union Pacific

Union Pacific (UNP) is one of our favorite ideas. We expect the firm's operating ratio to be among the best in the railroad group by the end of this decade, and we like its exposure to growth in Mexico as well as future export expansion on the West Coast. The firm is levered to coal, though we note its mix is more of the PRB variety, which should continue to take share from CAPP coal in the domestic market. The firm also boasts a strong Valuentum Dividend Cushion score and a decent annual yield. But what is Union Pacific worth? Let's find out in this article.

We think a comprehensive analysis of a firm's discounted cash-flow valuation, relative valuation versus industry peers, as well as an assessment of technical and momentum indicators is the best way to identify the most attractive stocks at the best time to buy. This process culminates in what we call our Valuentum Buying Index, which ranks stocks on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best. Here's a graphical representation of our fundamentally-driven process with a technical/timing overlay.

If a firm is undervalued both on a DCF and on a relative valuation basis and is showing improvement in technical and momentum indicators, it scores high on our scale. Union Pacific currently posts a VBI score of 6 on our scale, reflecting our 'fairly valued' DCF assessment of the firm, its neutral relative valuation versus peers, and bullish technicals. We like firms that register a 9 or 10 on our index. We compare Union Pacific to peers Canadian National (CNI), CSX Corp (CSX), and Norfolk Southern (NSC).

Investment Considerations

Investment Highlights

? One of America's most recognized companies, Union Pacific links 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country by rail, providing a critical link in the global supply chain. The railroad's diversified business mix includes agricultural products, automotive, chemicals, coal, industrial products and intermodal.

? We expect Union Pacific's operating ratio to be among the best in the railroad group by the end of this decade, and we like its exposure to growth in Mexico as well as future export expansion on the West Coast.

? Union Pacific has an excellent combination of strong free cash flow generation and low financial leverage. We expect the firm's free cash flow margin to average about 19.5% in coming years. Total debt-to-EBITDA was 1 last year, while debt-to-book capitalization stood at 31.2%.

? The firm is levered to coal, though we note its mix is more of the Powder River Basin variety, which should continue to take share from Central Appalachian coal in the domestic market. The firm also boasts a strong Valuentum Dividend Cushion score and a decent annual yield.

? The firm experienced a revenue CAGR of about 14% during the past 3 years. We expect its revenue growth to be better than its peer median during the next five years.

Business Quality

Economic Profit Analysis

The best measure of a firm's ability to create value for shareholders is expressed by comparing its return on invested capital (ROIC) with its weighted average cost of capital (WACC). The gap or difference between ROIC and WACC is called the firm's economic profit spread. Union Pacific's 3-year historical return on invested capital (without goodwill) is 9.4%, which is below the estimate of its cost of capital of 10%. As such, we assign the firm a ValueCreation? rating of POOR. In the chart below, we show the probable path of ROIC in the years ahead based on the estimated volatility of key drivers behind the measure. The solid grey line reflects the most likely outcome, in our opinion, and represents the scenario that results in our fair value estimate.

Cash Flow Analysis

Firms that generate a free cash flow margin (free cash flow divided by total revenue) above 5% are usually considered cash cows. Union Pacific's free cash flow margin has averaged about 13.9% during the past 3 years. As such, we think the firm's cash flow generation is relatively STRONG. The free cash flow measure shown above is derived by taking cash flow from operations less capital expenditures and differs from enterprise free cash flow (FCFF), which we use in deriving our fair value estimate for the company. For more information on the differences between these two measures, please visit our website at Valuentum.com. At Union Pacific, cash flow from operations increased about 50% from levels registered two years ago, while capital expenditures expanded about 33% over the same time period.

Valuation Analysis

We think Union Pacific is worth $174 per share, which represents a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of about 21 times last year's earnings and an implied EV/EBITDA multiple of about 9.8 times last year's EBITDA. Our model reflects a compound annual revenue growth rate of 6.4% during the next five years, a pace that is lower than the firm's 3-year historical compound annual growth rate of 14%. Our model reflects a 5-year projected average operating margin of 37.9%, which is above Union Pacific's trailing 3-year average. Beyond year 5, we assume free cash flow will grow at an annual rate of 3.7% for the next 15 years and 3% in perpetuity. For Union Pacific, we use a 10% weighted average cost of capital to discount future free cash flows.

Margin of Safety Analysis

Our discounted cash flow process values each firm on the basis of the present value of all future free cash flows. Although we estimate the firm's fair value at about $174 per share, every company has a range of probable fair values that's created by the uncertainty of key valuation drivers (like future revenue or earnings, for example). After all, if the future was known with certainty, we wouldn't see much volatility in the markets as stocks would trade precisely at their known fair values. Our ValueRisk? rating sets the margin of safety or the fair value range we assign to each stock. In the graph below, we show this probable range of fair values for Union Pacific. We think the firm is attractive below $139 per share (the green line), but quite expensive above $209 per share (the red line). The prices that fall along the yellow line, which includes our fair value estimate, represent a reasonable valuation for the firm, in our opinion.

Future Path of Fair Value

We estimate Union Pacific's fair value at this point in time to be about $174 per share. As time passes, however, companies generate cash flow and pay out cash to shareholders in the form of dividends. The chart below compares the firm's current share price with the path of Union Pacific's expected equity value per share over the next three years, assuming our long-term projections prove accurate. The range between the resulting downside fair value and upside fair value in Year 3 represents our best estimate of the value of the firm's shares three years hence. This range of potential outcomes is also subject to change over time, should our views on the firm's future cash flow potential change. The expected fair value of $226 per share in Year 3 represents our existing fair value per share of $174 increased at an annual rate of the firm's cost of equity less its dividend yield. The upside and downside ranges are derived in the same way, but from the upper and lower bounds of our fair value estimate range.

Britain welcomes US-Russian agreement on Syria

British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Saturday welcomed a US-Russian deal to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons and said the priority now was the "full and prompt implementation" of the agreement.

Hague said the ambitious deal, struck between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva, was a "significant step forward" and the onus was now on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to comply.

"Have spoken to Secretary Kerry. UK welcomes US-Russia agreement on #Syria chemical weapons. Urgent work on implementation now to take place," Hague said on Twitter.

In a fuller message issued by the Foreign Office, he said: "The priority must now be full and prompt implementation of the agreement, to ensure the transfer of Syria's chemical weapons to international control.

"I will hold talks with Secretary Kerry and (French) Foreign Minister (Laurent) Fabius in Paris on Monday to discuss the way forward, including action at the United Nations Security Council.

"The onus is now on the Assad regime to comply with this agreement in full. The international community, including Russia, must hold the regime to account.

"This includes doing everything we can to stop the continuing bloodshed in Syria, bringing all sides together to agree a political solution to the conflict."

Britain has been pushing for a strong international response to an alleged chemical attack in Damascus last month which was blamed on President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

But Prime Minister David Cameron was forced to back down on threats of military action, made alongside the United States, after lawmakers voted against strikes.

2013 NCAA Football: Johnny Football in Focus

When Alabama plays Texas A&M all eyes will only be one player

When Alabama plays Texas A&M all eyes will only be on one player

When Texas A&M plays Alabama on Saturday, there will be a crazy media circus.

Some will say it?s because of the two highly ranked programs playing so early in the season. Others will claim its because the back-to-back National Champion Crimson Tide are looking to avenge their only loss of last season. And even more will claim that it?s just a regular day in the SEC.

Those are my favorite. Relax SEC fans. Seriously.

The real reason for the circus is simple: Johnny Manziel.

Of the hundreds of cameras that will be at Kyle Stadium on Saturday, only one will have a sole focus. That focus is Johnny Football.? And he, and he alone, is the reason this game matters at all.

Hear that? That?s the garbled sound you hear when Texas ?twang meets ?Bama bellyaching. Get used to it. It?s all you?re going to hear starting first thing tomorrow when Game Day kicks off.

Don?t believe the hype. Everyone, including the NCAA, Texas A&M, Alabama, ESPN and CBS?s broadcasting team are going to try and convince you that this game is bigger than one player.

It?s not.

As Craig Silver, coordinating producer for CBS?s college football coverage, told Sports Illustrated, ?No matter where he is and no matter what part of the game it is, we will have a shot of it. If he?s anywhere in sight of that camera, we will catch it.?

Shout out to Craig. He gets it.

Since these two teams played last season, in a game that defined Manziel?s Heisman-winning freshman year, the gunslinger from Tyler, Texas has been the most talked about athlete in the world.

Proof?

He went to an NBA Finals game this summer and that he went, how he got tickets and whether or not he should?ve been there, was the story. Lebron James played in that game?and Johnny Football got headlines.

So no, this isn?t about anyone, anything or any combination of anyones or anythings, else. This is about the James Dean of college football. A star, ?student-athlete? who transcends his sport, but isn?t really allowed to, unless sanctioned by the adults cashing checks off his abilities, taking on the world and a really good defensive team, while we all watch. Shark Week can suck it.

This may be the one time, outside of the SuperBowl, a fan can watch a football game and with two words everyone would understand why they were watching. Middle-aged moms outside of Alabama don?t know or care who Nick Saban is. And he was in ?The Blind Side?. But they have heard of Johnny Football.

He?s been everywhere. Late night talk shows, TMZ, heck all he needs now is to tweet Miley Cyrus and the entire internet will explode.*

I?ve thought long and hard about Johnny Manziel this year. Partially because he has the chance to be the first athlete in NCAA history to really stick it to the hypocrisy machine that is college athletics and partially because every sports media outlet hasn?t let so much as a week go by without talking about him.

There isn?t a full conclusion to be made about him yet.

Maybe tomorrow?s game will give some more insight into how he handles pressure.? Maybe it?ll be our chance to watch his legend grow. Maybe he?ll show an appreciation for pop culture, pull a Dave Chappelle, and decide to half-ass it after things don?t go his way.**

Or maybe, he?ll just be a 20-year-old college football player who plays too fast and too loose to be contained by them big ole boys down in ?Bama.

No matter what happens though, we?re all going to see it. And that?s the reason we were all watching in the first place.

Don?t let anyone tell you different.

Scott Christopher is a writer and comedian living in Los Angeles. Oh, and he?ll always call Connecticut home. Follow him @ScottC247

*Seriously though, I know she?s engaged, but tell me that wouldn?t be the best power couple you?ve ever seen. Two young stars that no one can stop talking about and who have done almost everything in their power to embrace Miley?s lyrics: ?We run things, things don?t run we. Don?t take nothing from nobody?. If it happens, you?re welcome world?and sorry Twitter, you?re over capacity.

**Say what you want, but that?s what Chappelle did. He didn?t like the way things were going, so he bailed. That?s his right. But he should also recognize the same amount of celebrity that lead to him getting grief on stage that night in Hartford, is the same amount of celebrity that allowed him to basically steal from all of those good-natured, paying customers and fans of his that came out to support him. If he wasn?t ?Famous Dave Chappelle from the Chappelle Show, aka I?m Rick James, bitch? there?s no way he?d get away with that. Then to put it on the audience a few nights later and talk about an entire city because of a handful of fans?he deserved every ?Boo? he got while walking off that stage. Shout out to Hartford and Connecticut. Oh, and Dave, if as you suggested, ?the North Koreans decide to attack? they?ll be coming for your hometown first. Hartford will help with the insurance coverage though.

Lefty or Righty? Genes for Handedness Found

Genes that play a role in the orientation of internal organs may also affect whether someone is right- or left-handed, new research suggests.

The study, published today (Sept. 12) in the journal PLOS Genetics, suggest those genes may also play a role in the brain, thereby affecting people's handedness.

Still, the findings can't yet explain the mystery of why a minority of people are left-handed because each gene only plays a tiny role in people's handedness.

"Handedness is a complex trait, there are hundreds of genes involved," said study co-author William Brandler, a genetics doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford in England. "There are also lots of environmental influences." [Southpaw Stats: 11 Fun Facts About Lefties]

Origins of handedness

Throughout the world, between about 5 and 20 percent of the population is left-handed. Favoring one hand for most tasks can allow people to do things more quickly, but exactly why there's such a strong bias towards right-handedness in humans is a mystery. Humans' close relatives, such as chimpanzees, are equally likely to be southpaws.

A 2012 study suggested that more cooperative societies that share tools and tasks have more people with the same dominant hand. Other studies propose that being a leftie is handy in a fistfight ? but only if most people are expecting a right hook.

Although a few genes have been implicated in handedness, genes are not the entire story, as identical twins often favor different hands. Some have even proposed that brain damage in utero causes brains to rewire to make people lefties.

Genetic links

To get at the genetic roots of handedness, Brandler (who is a southpaw) and his colleagues asked 728 people to move a row of 10 pegs using first their right hand, then their left. People who take much longer on one side versus the other have greater hand dominance.

The researchers then analyzed the genes of these people and identified several genes associated with greater hand dominance. They then confirmed the association in a larger group of 2,666 people.

The strongest association was with a gene called PCSK6 that creates left- and right- parts in utero. The other genes played a role in how the organs in the body are oriented.

People with defects these genes may be otherwise healthy, but have situs inversus, a condition in which internal organs are mirrored from their normal orientation. Others have more serious defects, such as left-handed isomerism, in which people have essentially two left sides and multiple spleens throughout the body, or heterotaxia, a typically fatal condition where "organs are all over the place," Brandler told LiveScience.

The findings suggest that the same genes that affect the left-hand symmetry of organs in the body also affects the way the brain is wired. That, in turn, affects whether someone's right or left hand is dominant.

"Handedness is an outward reflection of brain asymmetries for motor coordination," Brandler said. "If you're right-handed, it means you're left hemisphere dominant for motor coordination. That's because our brains are cross-wired."

Still, to truly tease out the roots of left-handedness, researchers will need to untangle the role of hundreds of other genes and isolate environmental factors, he said.

Researchers link obesity and the body's production of fructose

Researchers link obesity and the body's production of fructose [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 10-Sep-2013

AURORA, Colo. (Sept. 10, 2013) Researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine reported today that the cause of obesity and insulin resistance may be tied to the fructose your body makes in addition to the fructose you eat.

In recent years the role of added sweeteners, such as high fructose corn syrup and table sugar (sucrose), has taken center stage as risk factors for obesity and insulin resistance. Numerous studies suggest that the risk from added sugars may be due to the fructose content.

But in the study published in the Sept. 10 edition of Nature Communications, the team led by researchers at the CU School of Medicine reports that fatty liver and insulin resistance may also result from fructose produced in the liver from non-fructose containing carbohydrates.

The study, whose first authors are Miguel Lanaspa, PhD, and Takuji Ishimoto, MD, reported that mice can convert glucose to fructose in the liver, and that this conversion was critical for driving the development of obesity and insulin resistance in mice fed glucose.

"Our data suggests that it is the fructose generated from glucose that is largely responsible for how carbohydrates cause fatty liver and insulin resistance," said Lanaspa.

Richard Johnson, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the division of renal diseases and hypertension at the School of Medicine and senior author of the paper, said: "Our studies provide an understanding for why high glycemic foods may increase the risk for obesity and insulin resistance. While some of the weight gain is driven by the caloric content and the effects of stimulating insulin, the ability of high glycemic foods to cause insulin resistance and fatty liver is due in part to the conversion of glucose to fructose inside the body.

"Ironically, our study shows that much of the risk from ingesting high glycemic foods is actually due to the generation of fructose, which is a low glycemic sugar. These studies challenge the dogma that fructose is safe and that it is simply the high glycemic carbohydrates that need to be restricted."
