Kermit the Frog uses Carbon Credits! ? Real Estate Inspection ...

As Kermit the frog might have said, ?I was green before it was popular to be green.?

Green Frog The ?Green? movement has its roots in the late 60?s with the ?back-to-the land? movement?-when people really started to think not just about alternative life styles but different methods of building?-including sustainability.? It could easily be argued that the father and mother of the back-to-the-land movement were Helen and Scott Nearing.? They started ?Living the Good Life??in 1932?a logical reaction to the Great Depression.? (Is this starting to sound like d?j? vu all over again?) ?Prior to Helen and Scott there were various other societal breakaways from the Shakers & Quakers to the Pilgrims?-but these were more religious than geo-political?-but nonetheless some of the early ?green roots??-if only in attitude.

By the time an idea becomes mainstream, trendy, or common, it has usually had its roots planted at another time?-growing, mutating and blossoming into its current form.

My own roots as a builder began in 1971, living off the land in rural upstate NY, in a Ferro-cement dome?-and I was a huge fan of Helen and Scott.

There is an old article in a 1978 issue of Mother Earth News? that talks about the prototype for a much larger one that my first wife Jill and I built.? (My oldest daughter was born in the later version.) At the time, I was really into building with very simple readily available materials?-I quickly learned that this desire had to be balanced with the ability to heat the dang thing efficiently.? It would have made a better chicken coop?and did.

Eventually my house designs evolved into what became commonly known as ?Passive Solar??-where passive (non mechanical) construction techniques were used to improve the energy efficiency of the home.? These approaches, among other things, included more insulation, and orientation of the home to take advantage of the sun?-which would result in increasing the amount of windows in the path of the sun, while decreasing them elsewhere.? A more complete explanation of this type of building can be found in A Reasoned Indictment of the Green Movement.

In my opinion the ?Green? movement has not paid enough attention to the energy saving aspects of homes and yet part of its mission is to lower the use of fossil fuels.? While changing your light bulbs to CFL?s may be a good thing to do, it is nothing like what a revolution in the way homes are designed and built would do.? Every day, homes that meet the ?highest certifications? of the green movement are being built completely disconnected from the earth?-vented crawl spaces with insulated floors.? Metaphorically speaking, it is usually a good idea to stay connected to Mother Earth.

It is easy to get caught up in the ?hype? and ?smoke-and-mirrors? of Carbon Credits; or, taking farm land out of food production to support bio-diesel.? Since the early 70?s there have been simpler more cost effective ways to actually reduce the use of fossil fuels and ease our guilty conscience at the same time.? While, as a transition, Carbon Credits may be necessary to encourage business to do the right thing, is it the right thing to give Carbon Credits to companies that make things we don?t REALLY need?? You know the things I am talking about?-the things that recycle from yard sale to yard sale?? How much oil could be saved annually if businesses were not allowed to run the signs on their buildings when they aren?t open?

This leads me to conclude that there are many different colors of frogs?-and that not all green is green?-but it is getting there.

Four artists were remembered at Sunday's Billboard Music Awards, but fans are buzzing about how disco queen Donna Summer's tribute was noticeably cut off.

Summer, Whitney Houston, Adam Yauch and Robin Gibb were all honored at the ceremony in different ways.

Pop star Natasha Bedingfield honored Summer, who died of cancer May 17,?calling her "a?remarkable woman who brought so much light, and who inspired many women, including myself through her music. And if we can remember her through her music, this will never really be the last dance.?

Bedingfield then began singing Summer's Academy Award-winning song "Last Dance" as photos of the icon were displayed on a screen overhead.? But?just as?Bedingfield picked up the beat for the main portion of the dance track,?she was abruptly cut off so the show could cut to commercial.?The edit left some viewers unsatisfied.

?She sounded great, but producers cut to a commercial just when Natasha was getting to the good part of the song,? pop music writer D?luv wrote on his blog, Chart Rigger. ?That was definitely one of the more tacky parts of the evening.?

The plague, bacterial dysentery, and cholera have one thing in common: These dangerous diseases are caused by bacteria which infect their host using a sophisticated injection apparatus. Through needle-like structures, they release molecular agents into their host cell, thereby evading the immune response. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in G?ttingen in cooperation with colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin and the University of Washington in Seattle (USA) have now elucidated the structure of such a needle at atomic resolution. Their findings might contribute to drug tailoring and the development of strategies which specifically prevent the infection process.

Hundreds of tiny hollow needles sticking out of the bacterial membrane ? it is a treacherous tool that makes pathogens causing plague or cholera so dangerous. Together with a base, embedded in the membrane, these miniature syringes constitute the so-called type III secretion system ? an injection apparatus through which the pathogens introduce molecular agents into their host cell. There, these substances manipulate essential metabolic processes and disable the immune defines of the infected cells. The consequences are fatal as the pathogens can now spread within the organism without hindrance. To date, traditional antibiotics are prescribed to fight the infection. However, as some bacterial strains succeed in developing resistances, researchers worldwide seek to discover more specific drugs.

The exact structure of the 60 to 80 nanometre (60 to 80 millionths of a millimetre) long and about eight nanometre wide needles has so far been unknown. Classical methods such as X-ray crystallography or electron microscopy failed or yielded wrong model structures. Not crystallisable and insoluble, the needle resisted all attempts to decode its atomic structure. Therefore Adam Lange and Stefan Becker at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry together with a team of physicists, biologists and chemists chose a completely novel approach. In cooperation with David Baker at the University of Washington, and Michael Kolbe at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, the scientists successfully combined the production of the needle in the laboratory with solid-state NMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and computer modelling. The researchers deciphered the structure of the needle atom by atom and visualised its molecular architecture for the first time in the angstrom range, a resolution of less than a tenth of a millionth of a millimetre.

This required progresses in several fields. "We have made big steps forward concerning sample production as well as solid-state NMR spectroscopy," says Adam Lange. "Finally, we were also able to use one of the presently most powerful solid-state NMR spectrometers in Christian Griesinger's NMR-based Structural Biology Department at our Institute." With 20 tesla, the magnetic field of this 850 megahertz spectrometer is about 400,000 times as strong as that of the earth.

"We were surprised to see how the needles are constructed," says Lange. As expected, the needles of pathogens causing diseases as diverse as food poisoning, bacterial dysentery, or the plague show striking similarities. However, in contrast to prevailing assumptions, the similarities are found in the inner part of the needles whereas the surface is astonishingly variable. According to the scientist, this variability might be a strategy of the bacteria to evade immune recognition by the host. Changes on the surface of the needle make it difficult for the host's immune system to recognize the pathogen.

The scientists Lange, Kolbe, Becker, and their Max Planck colleagues Christian Griesinger und Arturo Zychlinsky, have focused on the bacterial injection apparatus for several years. Together with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing they already showed in 2010 how bacteria assemble their miniature syringes. The discovery of their structure in atomic detail not only enables researchers to gain new insights into how these pathogens outwit their host cells, it also offers the prospect to block the syringe assembly and the delivery of the bacterial factors using tailored molecules. Such substances, referred to as antiinfectives, could act more specifically and much earlier during infection than traditional antibiotics. "Thanks to our new technique, we can produce large amounts of needles in the lab. Our aim is now to develop a high-throughput method. This will allow us to search for new agents that prevent the formation of the needle," explains Stefan Becker.
