The Norwin Police Athletic League Junior Legion baseball team added another win to its tally last week by defeating Ligonier on the road on June 27, 9-1, to improve its record to 9-6-1.

Max Whiteman pitched the complete game for PAL; he allowed only one run while striking out four.

Robby Longanecker was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs, and Ryan Anselmino was 2-for-2, which included a bases-clearing double for his three RBI in the game.

The team already has clinched a spot in the top seven of the 11-team league, which puts it directly into the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.

PALentered the week with three home games remaining and still with a chance to clinch a top-four seed and home field for the first round Westmoreland County playoffs.

PALwas scheduled to play games Monday and Tuesday, both after this edition's deadline. The team is scheduled to end the regular season with a game against first-place Murrysville, Thursday at 6 p.m. at the PALShafton Complex.

Duncan runs at Olympic trials

Norwin and Penn State graduate Megan Duncan took part in the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene, Ore., last week.

Duncan, who was the 2011 Big Ten champion in the 400-meter hurdles, was one of 28 athletes bidding for three spots on the U.S. Olympic team in the 400-meter hurdles.

Her stay in Eugene lasted only one race, but just barely, as she finished with a time of 57.63 seconds, which was the 17th-best preliminary time.

Duncan's time was one place and 0.58 of a second behind the last qualifier, former NCAA 100- and 400-meter hurdle champ Queen Harrison.

More Olympic trials

Other athletes who attended nearby high schools also made a push to reach the London Olympics later this month.

Former Franklin Regional diver Samantha Pickens reached the finals and placed 12th on the 3-meter springboard at the U.S. Diving Trials. While she misses out, another WPIALproduct, Montour's Cassidy Krug, won the event and will represent the U.S. in London.

Also, former Gateway swimmer Andrew Nosbisch attempted to qualify in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Swimming Trials but did not qualify for the semifinals in either.
