NYC lawyer: Iranian cameraman seeks US asylum

(AP) ? A lawyer for a cameraman who was accompanying Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (ah-muh-DEE'-neh-zhahd) to the U.S. for the United Nations General Assembly in New York says his client has defected.

Paul O'Dwyer, a New York City-based lawyer who is representing Hassan Gol Khanban, confirmed Sunday that his client is seeking asylum in the U.S. He provided no other details.

It wasn't immediately clear when the Iranian defected or his current whereabouts.

A message left with Alireza Miryousefi, a spokesman for the Iranian mission to the U.N., was not immediately returned.

Ahmadinejad addressed the assembly on Wednesday, his last as president of Iran.

Michael Jordan Appears to Miss Golf Attire Memo at Ryder Cup (Photo)

Michael Jordan very well could be the greatest basketball player the world has ever seen, but the list of things he's not so good at seems to be getting significantly longer.

A baseball player? Not so great. An NBA owner? There have certainly been better. Now Jordan can add something new to his list of shortcomings: fashion mogul.

Although Jordan certainly brought a winning presence to the Medinah Country Club in Illinois this weekend, his outfit was not up to par. Donning acid-washed jeans and what appeared to be the dry land version of a life preserver, Jordan stuck out like a sore thumb in a sea of polo shirts and khaki pants.

The captains and representatives of the U.S. welcomed Jordan with open arms on the first tee box Friday morning, but those who woke up to watch the first shots of the opening round probably wish they hadn't. One would think that someone who has lost as much money on a golf course as Jordan would at least know how to dress for the occasion.

Check out the photo below to fully understand the horrors of his attire.

Maggie Gyllenhaal: The Proud Lefty Says Teachers Union Has ?Huge Problems?

The actress was unapologetic this week as she promoted the movie, telling interviewers that classifying ?Won?t Back Down? as an unequivocally anti-union movie is an ?oversimplified? way of viewing the issue.

?Clearly -- and I don't know anyone who?d disagree -- there are huge problems with the teachers union,? she told the Philadelphia Daily News on Friday. ?So you can be in support of a teachers union and unions in general, but if you don't take the time to look at things that are broken ... then it will fall apart completely.? ?

In the interview, Gyllenhaal said she comes from a family of proud leftists, and that she herself is staunchly pro-union. However, she also suggested that the quickness with which critics have come out to blast ?Won?t Back Down? as a crack against the labor movement shows intolerance among the pro-union camp. ?Can we not even take a look at ways that the teachers union isn't functioning without being called anti-union?? she said. ?

Earlier this week, Gyllenhaal gave a similar explanation when she appeared on NBC?s ?Today? show, saying that she supports unions fundamentally but ?finds some faults? with them. ?

In ?Won?t Back Down,? Gyllenhaal?s character invokes the so-called parent-trigger law -- a real-life statute first passed in California, which allows parents and teachers to reclaim a failing school. The character?s attempts to reclaim her daughter?s Pittsburgh school are hindered by a bullying union representative played by Holly Hunter.

Last month, Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, issued a public letter criticizing ?Won?t Back Down? as a ?false and misleading depiction of teachers and unions.?

Union supporters protested screenings of the movie in New York and Los Angeles. And Michael Mulgrew, president of New York City?s United Federation of Teachers, told the New York Times that the movie -- which is inspired by an actual incident in which a California parent invoked the parent-trigger law -- is a ?work of fiction.? He told the paper that, in real life, previous attempts by parents to reclaim schools have failed.

?Won?t Back Down? was financed by Phil Anschutz,

The Landscape: Please Climb That Tree

?Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.? - Albert Einstein

Students come into school each day equip with different abilities,?ethnicity, backgrounds, experiences, demographics, learning styles,?interests, talents, passions, strengths and weakness. ?How can we as educators expect all students to perform the same task, at the same level, at the same time, when all of our students are at different readiness levels?

Assessment is still a problem for most public education systems in the United States. ?There is way too much pressure for students to perform well on state standardized tests, especially when these tests are not an accurate reflection of student potential, nor success. The?excerpt?below is from the Innovative Educator and I could not agree more with Lisa Nielsen on this subject matter.

The "drill, kill, bubble fill" culture that is being rewarded today does not prepare our students for the 21st century workplace. There has been little emphasis to foster the ability of young people to discover a livelihood best suited to their unique strengths, talents, and passions. [1] ?This is because every single kid is grouped by date of manufacture and expected to meet the same learning goals at the same time and pop out the same way at the other end with little to no attention focused on customizing a program to unique individuals. [1] ?At the end of the K-12 tunnel every kid emerges supposedly ready for college and career, but rarely have they had a chance to spend time focusing on what it is that "they" are passionate about. Instead they focus on earning the magic carrot of a grade and diploma rewarded to students who are best at memorization, regurgitation, and compliance along with following orders that we all know often are not in the best interest of children. [1]

Lisa Nielsen also proposes a solution to this problem. ?Why not assess a collection of work produced by students to demonstrate content mastery, rather then having students take tests? Nielsen writes,?"Students can be assessed in a standardized way by authentically demonstrating how standards have been met. This could be captured in an ePortfolio or some other system which could be created on a national level. Students could meet standards at their own pace, in their own way and learning could be differentiated and aligned to each child?s talents, passions, interests, and abilities." [2]

This type of assessment closely resembles project-based learning. ?Project-based learning promotes inquiry and exploration, emphasizing creative thinking skills by allowing students to find that there are many ways to solve a problem. This instructional strategy provides students with the opportunity to create their own projects using their preferred learning style and interest, which allows for natural?differentiation?to occur.

I personally believe all students can learn. ?Moreover, I believe that students can continue to learn and grow their entire lives. ?I believe that effort and hard work is more of an indicator of success, than intelligence. If students believe in themselves, they can do anything that they put their mind to.

?How we learn shapes what we know and what we can do,? writes author Annie Murphy Paul in a recent Time column. ?Our knowledge and our abilities are largely determined not by our IQ or some other fixed measure of intelligence, but by the effectiveness of our learning process: call it our learning quotient.? ?This idea supports that anyone can learn, regardless of their inherent IQ, with?emphasis?on the process, the work and effort. [3]

Final Thought

We as educators need to be providing our students with authentic opportunities for them to demonstrate their learning and understanding. ?And the assessments that we use to measure their learning and understanding should accommodate and celebrate the diversity of our students. ?So the next time you have your students "climb a tree", be sure that they have all the tools and the support that they will need to get to the top. ?And be sure to remind them that there is more than one way to climb a tree!

Eulogy For Mom ? Conservative Christian Bible Study Materials

By Lewis Willis

Not only are there a number of people here ? mourners ? but there is also a flood of memories crowding its way into this small chapel. That?s the way it is at funerals. Sometimes a family can scarcely see the people who are present, because of the memories. Go ahead and remember ? reminisce ? that?s what I intend to do in my remarks to you today, perhaps in a way that some might consider irreverently!

We Willises have been a large family of nine people. Naturally, each has his or her own thoughts today. My thoughts of the daily activities of the family are primarily of things that happened before I left home. The events in the lives of the younger children, I was not there to witness, and, therefore, I cannot speak of those things. Forgive me if there is something I should have included in these comments; I either do not know of them, or, more than likely, I have simply forgotten them. That?s the way it is with us old men!

I thought for some time for a word or expression that would somewhat sum up the life of Mom. I finally settled on ?family?; I think her family was the essence and substance of her life. Make absolutely no mistake about it, her first interest was God and the Church. But after that came her family. Anyone who knew her soon learned that her heart was centered on her children and grandchildren. Thus, I call to remembrance some memories about the Family.

Of course, the beginning of a family is the marriage. Mom and Dad had been happily married for 68 years when he died exactly one year ago to the day that Mom died, August 2. What an irony! She was never the same after Dad?s death. It is inevitable that such is the case. Two people who have been together so long do not function normally when one has gone. Theirs was a good marriage. If it experienced any major problems, I was never aware of them. Oh, there were the usual fusses and disagreements, but never did Dad abuse Mom in anyway, nor she him. She was the reason for his life! She loved and respected him, and they stood beside each other until the ravages of age separated them with his death. Mom?s failing health concerned him greatly and the changes brought by her decline he was never able to understand or accept. I am convinced that his confusion over nursing home living accelerated his death. You will remember he was hospitalized for the last time when, left alone the first night at a nursing home in Ft. Worth, he tried to get to Mom to comfort her in her distress. We would all have been surprised had he been indifferent toward her plight. But he never recovered from his anxiety over her condition.

And, Mom never recovered over her loss of Dad. She often spoke of her feelings of despair that she had not mourned his death as she thought she should. With Alzheimer?s disease, I?m not certain she had the capacity to mourn as she normally would have. If she was in possession of normal capacities, however, she knew Dad was much better off in death than he could possibly have been living in his condition. How do you mourn when someone goes to Heaven?s rest? So, death separated them. That?s what happens to us all sooner or later. Such is burdensome to observe, especially when one?s parents are going through that crisis. Sadly, we watched the ravages of age on them and their marriage. Personally, I am grateful they have now been delivered from that trauma.

I want to now speak to you of Mom. She and her kids are quite another story. There were always a number of children around. Alone, we were a crowd. But, she wanted our friends to come to our house to play, ?so she could keep an eye on? her kids; she insisted on knowing what we were doing. I?m not certain there was much comfort to her in that knowledge. Some of the things she saw looking out the windows watching her kids had to be less than comforting.

She saw Cecil and Don painting Grandma?s house next door. They got to the end of the job, except the gable of the wall next to our house. Unfortunately, they didn?t have a ladder long enough to reach the top so they had to make some provision to enable them to finish the job. They took two step-ladders, with a 2?12 extended between them, then placed a straight ladder in the middle. Don held the feet of the ladder on the 2?12 while Cecil climbed to the very top, with paint can and brush, and finished the painting work. With the job finally done, it was time for some fun. Cecil asked Don what he?d do if he sprinkled him with paint. Don said he?d just turn loose of the ladder he was holding. Whereupon Cecil came crashing to the ground from the top, landing on his back and catching the falling paint can just before it landed in his face. The paint sloshed out right into Cecil?s face and hair ? and folks, that was the days before water-based paint! Mom not only had to witness this debacle, she also had to clean the paint off Cecil?s head. She probably should have let him just wear it off!

Out that same window she saw Cecil and Billy light a possum on fire with kerosene. The possum, with flames leaping up higher than a man?s waist, headed straight for escape under the family house, directly under the window out of which Mom was watching. The possum ran toward the house, not once but twice, and the boys barely prevented the house being burned down! I?m sure she was comforted to watch what her kids were doing that day!

One of the most frightening things to happen was when she learned that Don was severely injured when the saddle slipped on the horse he was riding, catching his foot in the stirrup, and dragging him across a bridge. He was unconscious, and was taken to the hospital. You had to be in pretty bad shape at our house to be taken to the hospital in those days. After the marvelous medical care he received in Lufkin, he was sent home, still unconscious! And he remained unconscious for three days! Apparently it was thought he might as well be at home, after all, there were no broken bones. And, he survived, though we have always had an obvious explanation for Don through the years since that happened!

I was the third child; the only truly good one of the bunch! I was never any trouble; I was always doing exactly as I had been told to do. The only problem I ever had was surviving all the slanderous reports about me that Ouida gave to Mom. Though she is younger than I, that?s the way it is with oldest sisters. They always get their brothers in trouble. Unfortunately, remember Mom made us play at home so she could watch all of this confusion and hear hourly behavior reports.
Then, there was Sue; beautiful Sue! Always primping and preparing for her anticipated glamourous life! I cannot recall her every doing anything mischievous or mean. For that matter, I cannot recall her ever doing anything at all! Just sitting around looking pretty!

Mom watched out her window as Mike became a cowboy. He learned to ride calves at a very early age. Cecil came home from college, we had a new baby calf, and little Mike (perhaps three years old) simply had to learn to ride that calf. He had some difficulty at first but he soon mastered the art . . . when Cecil tied Mike?s feet under the belly of the calf! Mike bounced around the yard on that calf until he because an expert cowboy. Or, until the calf tired of jumping. Or, until Mom demanded that Cecil save her baby! I don?t know which came first. But, the shaking he received also somewhat explains Mike today, doesn?t it? I?ve heard him say that he has no hair today because that calf rubbed it all off, dragging him around the yard. I don?t knows if that?s true or not; something definitely happened to Mike?s hair though!

Now, Barbara was the youngest, and was therefore totally spoiled. The kids that were still at home as she grew up probably, at the time, didn?t even like her. Mom had decided that Barbara was going to be a concert pianist, I guess. Anyway, she saved her dimes and coins until she was able to buy Barbara a piano. This was probably the worst thing that ever happened to the other kids. Thereafter, anytime there was a job to do around the house, Barbara was unavailable to help; she had to practice her piano lessons. Mom must have really been ?watching her kids? at that time. I?m a little surprised that both Barbara and the piano didn?t just mysteriously disappear one night!

Yes, Mom kept us at home, so she could watch us, and know what we were doing. She must have felt much ?better about us all, after witnessing some of the things we did! The other mothers of the community, no doubt, felt better about the safety of their children, knowing Mom was ?watching us.?

There were times when discipline was required. Switches were the order of the day; she could use one better than most mothers. On a bare back, her switches seemed almost lethal. Psychologists and psychiatrists today, with all their psycho-babble, tell us how damaging discipline is for kids. However, I?ve now seen several generations of children who have been raised on their philosophy, and I prefer Mom?s child-raising philosophy more than theirs. I believe her approach worked better and I think my brothers and sisters share that same view. None of us was permanently damaged by her discipline.

Mom?s love for the Lord and the church must also be remembered. She did something special which certainly none of us understood at the time. You see, until Cecil, and then Don, started preaching, Dad didn?t go to worship. She always took us to every worship . . . alone! I do not believe there was a family in the church more faithful than ours. During the critical, formative years of her children, she was determined they would know the Lord. That was the principle work of Mom. Dad was off somewhere else at worship time. He was usually working on one of his trucks all day, getting ready for Monday morning and his logging work.

Sundays always began the same way. A big breakfast was prepared for all. After breakfast, Dad had the boys do the dishes, then help him make the beds, and he swept the entire house, from one end to the other. Meanwhile, Mom was getting the girls ready for worship. Each had long hair and she meticulously curled every strand; she did it perfectly, and they were beautiful. We all had special ?church clothes? which Mom had carefully prepared ahead of time for the worship. When we went off to worship, we were wearing the very best, and cleanest clothes we had! We didn?t sit in the back at worship; we were seated on the front benches. For some reason, she always had me sitting on the bench directly in front of her and every time Ouida did something, Mom pinched me! I still don?t understand that.

Let me tell you something else I remember about the religion of our family in those days. In spite of our dire financial circumstances, we always had ?meat? to eat on Sundays and Wednesdays. That?s because the preachers ate with us on those days. The men who preached here in Groveton always had a Sunday invitation to lunch at our house, and to spend the afternoon with us. If it was just the preacher, or him and his wife, or him and his wife and five kids, whatever, they all were invited to our house on Sunday. And, usually in the afternoon, the neighborhood kids assembled there as well. Some good football games were played on Sunday afternoons on the dirt road that ran in front of our house.

But, this was not all about food and fun. Mom was raising a large family, and she was determined to spiritually lead us properly. If Dad was not there to take the lead, then she had to do all she could, enlisting the help of the godly men who preached here, to see that her kids turned out to be Christians. If she had to work harder to accomplish that, she would pay the price. Cecil and Don, in their critical teenager years, came under the influence of these brethren, and they obeyed the Gospel. Through the influence of Mom, Grandma and Jodie, and those preachers, in time Cecil and Don decided they would spend their lives preaching the Gospel. They were nurtured along and encouraged by Mom and these brethren, and by the time they were in high school, both had Sunday preaching appointments in small congregations throughout this part of the country. Though Dad was still not faithful, the boys would each take a log truck, and drive to their preaching appointments on Sundays.

Mom had achieved her objective with her two oldest children. Through their influence, in time I also became a gospel preacher, as did Mike; all four of us. The girls all also obeyed the gospel. Ouida?s husband was an elder in the church, and Sue?s husband is a deacon. The family has had a significant impact on the church as a result of Mom?s faithfulness. When Cecil held his first gospel meeting here in Groveton, Ouida and I were baptized, and Dad was restored. Dad remained faithful to the end of his days! That, too, must be attributed to Mom?s faithfulness. Had she just lived as he had, none of us would likely be serving God today.

The preaching of Mom?s sons has been far-reaching. In those days, she could never have imagined the impact her family would have on the church of the 20th and 21st centuries. From this small town of about 1000-1200 people, her boys have gone forth. We have preached in most parts of Texas, into many different places in Florida, Kentucky, Kansas, Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Georgia, Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Hawaii, Alaska, and Wisconsin. Probably other states as well. We have preached in Eastern and Western Canada, in the Philippines, in Israel, Germany, and in Greece. We have had opportunity to teach many more through religious journals we have edited, articles we have written for publication, church bulletins we have edited, radio teaching we have done, published debates we have conducted, and books and tracts we have written. Who would ever have dreamed that a Mother living in a small East Texas town might touch the lives of so many, in such distant places, as Mom did through her sons? She put us in a place to be taught the Truth, and was determined we would know how important it is to teach and defend it. It is a tribute to Mom, for without her direction, such would never have happened.

Mom was not totally absorbed in her husband and her children. She actively sought occasion to get out of the house and into her own activities. When we owned the Woodlake store, she was in it meeting, talking with, and serving the people of the community. Through the years, she worked many hours in the Post Office at Woodlake. She loved to laugh and joke, till near the end of her life. When the doctors told her she was dying, Ouida asked her if she wouldn?t like to go see Dad. She responded, ?Let Sue go!?

Her passion was crocheting. Dad called it knot-tying. She made many beautiful items for her family and friends through the years. Her last big undertaking was crocheting family last names for her children and grandchildren. She even made some of these items for distant relatives and strangers. She crocheted probably 125 of these name displays. They are beautiful when mounted and framed. Young people, Mom would be pleased if, each time you see and admire her crochet work in the future, you would remember her, and her love for you which prompted her to spend so many hours making that ?name? display for you.

Mom dearly loved to sing. All of her children can and love to sing, also. We used to travel throughout this region to singings conducted by churches of Christ. We had a quartet, consisting of Mom, Cecil, Don, and me. We entertained our area brethren with spiritual songs, until we learned that the worship of the Lord is not to be entertainment. Had we had our preference, we would have preferred to continue.

Many hours were spent at home singing. When the peas were picked each year, after supper we all went to the back porch to shell them. Sometimes there would be several tubs of peas to shell, so it took a lot of time. Sometimes the neighbors came to help with the task, sometimes we helped them at their homes. But, always we sang! We knew the words, the parts, and the music by heart. There were very few songs we couldn?t sing. We sang the ?fancy, spirited? songs, and we sang the old standards. You know the words of one of them. Sing it with me:

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear;
What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer.
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry, Everything to God in prayer.

Listen . . . Listen . . . Can you not almost hear her singing the alto part years ago, or in later years, singing the tenor? Yes, we hear and we remember. That?s why we could hardly sing that old familiar song today.

Family and friends, ladies and gentlemen, these things of which I have spoken are family memories ? Precious Memories. J.B.F. Wright penned a song by that title, some of the words of which stir our souls today:

Precious father, loving mother, Fly across the lonely years;
And old home scenes of my childhood, In fond memory appear.
Precious mem?ries, how they linger, How they ever flood my soul;
In the stillness of the midnight, Precious, sacred scenes unfold.

It has occurred to me that this will very probably be our last family gathering here in Groveton . .? . this occasion then will itself become a Precious Memory, hopefully. We have briefly gazed back upon an ancestor and our ancestry. We have shared some laughs and some tears. And now we must take Mom to her final resting place beside Dad and Cecil. The moments will pass swiftly now; savor them each and every one. Paint the scene indelibly on your mind and heart as we go to Sumpter Cemetery. Remember each mile, each step of the way. And, should your travels bring you into this area in the future, remember their grave sites; pause to visit, to pay your respects, to remember.

Yes, We Are Going Down The Valley One By One, Frankie, then Cecil, Dad, and now Mom. She committed herself to place in our hearts and lives the faith of the New Testament. If you have never obeyed that Gospel, do so at your earliest opportunity; don?t waste any valuable time in doing so. If you are not a faithful Christian, repent of your sins, and start serving God again. If you are in a human denomination, get out while you can; you cannot go to Heaven in that human-controlled church. If you are in an unfaithful church of Christ, one teaching, sympathizing with, and/or practicing error, get out while you can.

We, too, will join that procession into eternity ere long, marching toward Judgment Day. Let?s all get ready so we can join our loved ones who have gone before, and by God?s grace and mercy, let?s enter the portals of Heaven itself, safely at home again with each other and with our God, as a family!

===============================================================================

Rationale

The rating on CapitaCommercial Trust (CCT) reflects the REIT's good quality

asset portfolio and its solid market position in the Singapore commercial

space sector. The unencumbered nature of almost 70% of CCT's total investment

properties (valued at Singapore dollar {S$} 6.2 billion as of June 30, 2012)

supports its strong financial flexibility and underpins the rating. CCT's

limited geographic diversity, significant exposure to the cyclical office

space sector in Singapore, and "intermediate" financial risk profile--with a

target gearing (defined as the ratio of loans to total investment properties)

of 30%-45%--temper these strengths.

We expect the CCT portfolio manager's good leasing record to continue when

CapitaGreen, a Grade A office building, is complete in 2014. In our view,

CCT's dominant market position in Singapore's Grade A office space would

strengthen because CapitaGreen will add a net lettable area of 700,000 square

feet to CCT's existing portfolio of three million square feet in lettable

space. As of June 30, 2012, the lease expiry profile of CCT's portfolio and

rent reviews are well staggered between 2012 and 2016. The REIT's overall

occupancy level of 96.2% is higher than the industry average of 91.6%. This

reflects the manager's good tenant-retention strategy and strong leasing

record.

In our base-case scenario, we expect CCT's gearing to increase to about

32%-35% over the next 12-24 months, after the completion of CapitaGreen. The

gearing is 30.1% as of June 30, 2012. We expect CCT's portfolio occupancy and

lease rates to decline, given global economic uncertainties. About 40% of

CCT's tenants are in the financial services, information technology and

telecommunications, and energy sectors. We project that the company's ratio of

funds from operations (FFO) to debt will weaken to about 9%-10% and EBITDA

interest cover will be about 3.8x-4x in the next 12-24 months. These ratios

are still within our threshold for CCT to have an "intermediate" financial

risk profile, as our criteria define the term. For the 12 months ended June

30, 2012, CCT's ratio of FFO to debt was 11% and EBITDA interest cover was

4.6x.

CCT's discretionary cash flow is minimal, given its low earnings retention.

This is typical of unit trust structures. Nevertheless, we expect the REIT's

strong financial flexibility to allow it to have access to debt and equity

markets. Such access will reduce the impact of the company's minimal

discretionary cash flow position and the inherent volatility in office lease

rates in Singapore.

Liquidity

CCT's liquidity is "adequate," as defined in our criteria. As of June 30,

2012, the REIT has a cash balance of S$132.1 million. We estimate that CCT's

liquidity sources will exceed liquidity uses by about 1.2x over the next 12

months. Our liquidity assessment is based on the following assumptions:

-- CCT will have FFO of S$200 million-S$230 million in 2012.

-- The trust has S$1.7 billion in untapped balance under its S$2 billion

medium-term notes program.

-- It will distribute S$200 million-S$210 million to unitholders.

On Aug. 14, 2012, CCT announced plans to refinance S$147 million of bonds that

are due in 2013 by issuing S$175 million of convertible bonds due in 2017.

Upon completion of this transaction in September 2012, CCT will not have any

major debt maturing in the next 24 months other than the S$50 million

medium-term notes due in June 2013.

We also believe that CCT's unencumbered assets of S$4.7 billion provide the

REIT with strong financial flexibility in the unlikely event of a liquidity

crunch. We expect CCT to adhere to its articulated financial policies when

using cash and taking on additional debt to finance the rest of its commitment

in CapitaGreen.

Outlook

The stable outlook reflects our view that CCT's property portfolio is of good

quality, its operating strategies are sound, and it has strong financial

flexibility. We could lower the rating if a fall in occupancy and negative

rental reversions cause CCT's cash flow metrics to weaken on a sustained

basis, such that its adjusted EBITDA interest cover falls below 2.5x and

SKorea: Japan must educate people on colonial past

(AP Photo/Xinhua, Fang Zhe) NO SALES

NEW YORK (AP) ? South Korea's foreign minister said Thursday that Japan's wartime past will overshadow relations between the two staunch U.S. allies until Japan educates its people about crimes committed during colonial rule.

In an interview with The Associated Press on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan said: "We are victims of Japanese colonial rule."

Kim, speaking a few hours before "serious" talks with Japan's foreign minister, also said South Korea would not compromise in its dispute over the tiny Dokdo islands, called Takeshima by Japan, which has further strained ties.

"When the Japanese government claims Dokdo is their territory, Korean people (take) it as another attempt to invade our country," Kim said. "So that's the Korean sentiment and I hope that the Japanese government understands this."

But he said South Korea recognizes its shared interests with fellow-democracy Japan, such as coping with North Korea and its nuclear ambitions. Both Japan and South Korea play host to tens of thousands of U.S. troops.

Kim said Seoul wants to expand relations with Japan, including in military cooperation, but only if South Korean public sentiment allows it. In June, they put on hold an intelligence sharing pact after it provoked an outcry in South Korea.

"We have to try to overcome these differences. It's up to the Japanese attitude. While they maintain their attitude ... there should be some limit on the scope of cooperation," he said.

Japan occupied the Korean peninsula for 35 years until the defeat of fascist forces in World War II and also occupied much of China. Japan issued a formal apology in 1993 over its use of Korean women as sex slaves by its soldiers during the war, but has failed to convince South Korea it is truly contrite.

Kim accused Japanese politicians of denying war crimes and said Japan's failure to educate its people properly about the past was the root cause of its various territorial disputes over islands in the region ? including with Russia and Asia's premier power, China.

"It's in sharp contrast with what Germany did to get the support and respect from the neighboring countries" after World War II, Kim said. "If Japan does it, I'm sure they can (get) respect from neighboring countries."

The dispute escalated last month when South Korean President Lee Myung-bak made an unprecedented visit to Dokdo, which drew unusually stern criticism from Japan. South Korea has rejected a Japanese proposal for the dispute to be settled in the International Court of Justice.

On Wednesday, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda stuck by Japan's stance on the islands, but said it did not want it to adversely affect relations with South Korea.

The issue stirs particularly strong nationalist passions among Koreans, as Japan's takeover of Dokdo in 1905 presaged its annexation of Korea five years later. South Korea took the islands back in the early 1950s and deploys police there.

Kim and Japan's Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba discussed the island dispute and historical issues including "comfort women," in their 30-minute meeting Thursday, said Japanese ministry spokeswoman Naoko Saiki. She would not disclose the substance of the exchanges but characterized them as "serious."

Saiki said they also discussed North Korea, and that despite the current difficulties between Japan and South Korea, the ministers agreed they have to cooperate and strive for "stable, forward-looking relations."

In the interview, Kim said that South Korea remains open to better relations with North Korea, and that it was disappointed when its offer earlier this month to provide flood relief to North Korea was rebuffed as inadequate by Pyongyang.

He also said that since North Korea's failed attempt in April to launch a satellite, "Trust has regressed." The unsuccessful launch was deemed by the U.S. to have military implications and to violate prior agreement by North Korea to suspend ballistic missile testing.

In spite of North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong Un, setting a somewhat more modern and open style, there has been no practical improvement in relations with South Korea or the United States with Pyongyang.

The United States, China and South Korea are all going through elections or leadership changes late this year, Kim noted, suggesting that any significant resumption of diplomatic activity with North Korea may have to wait.

How To Increase Profits Through Mobile Marketing | Eric Chua : Life ...

The wonders of mobile marketing. Promoting your business on mobile devices could open up new opportunities. Wondering where to begin in such a broad topic? Follow these tips to get started.

Have your friends test your site, ads, emails, and other parts of your campaign. If you can afford it, you might even want to hire someone to give you an objective opinion.

The most successful mobile marketers at some point started small, and over time implemented bigger and better strategies. You need to do this too. Start with short contacts and build your network before you move on to the next step. Make use of all the tools you have available.

TIP! You likely knew that it?s possible to create and distribute free apps, but were you aware that it?s super easy? If you create a great customer app, it can generate huge numbers of leads and increase profits greatly. There are many choices to make about app features; the possibilities are endless.

Mobile Platform

A successful standalone mobile platform must have a home base. Focus your efforts on creating a mobile presence that brings new visitors to your domain and connecting with existing visitors. Your business should not rely on a mobile platform alone.

You should get as much data as you can about your target audience with mobile marketing. This is how you can help to cater your message to your target?s tastes.

TIP! When contemplating using SMS messages to get the word out about your business, be sure to include an opt-in option. Be upfront about how many messages you will send out every month.

Remember to treat people on the telephone how you would like to be treated, like busy people. Act accordingly.

Any mobile marketing you intend to do should be checked for cross-platform compatibility. You must take into consideration many mobile devices when you are creating a mobile marketing campaign. Make sure the scripts you use will work across different platforms.

Make sure you market through all platforms your costumers might use. Be sure your messages display well on all platforms: Android devices, Blackberry, and iPhone. It will be easier for you if you can simplify the messages that you are sending instead of trying to make custom messages for each device. Keeping it simple is what you should strive for in mobile marketing.

TIP! If you have a big mobile marketing list and are planning to have a big company event or maybe a sale send a reminder a little before it starts, unless it?s an early morning sale. Doing so reminds the clients that there is something interesting going on.

Cross-promote your mobile marketing campaign through whatever other marketing channels you are operating. Give your mobile call exposure through social media, a website and even inside your physical retail store. This is a good way to maximize your campaign efforts, and to reach as many potential customers, and give them the chance to take advantage of special offers.

Don?t just send messages to your customers out of the blue. Always have something important to say when you message them. Nothing will sink a business faster than random, bothersome messages. Customers want information, not funny texts that they would normally get from a lose friend.

Remeber that viral ads will have the most impact. They may pass it to their associates, and your marketing will expand by a whole degree.

TIP! Do all the research you can on your audience. Know what your target audience responds to before you start designing a mobile marketing plan.

Qr Codes

QR codes are a great way to bring in new customers and promote your brand. Your customers can use your QR codes to instantly access special promotions and discounts. Their ease-of-use is one of the primary attributes of QR codes. By using QR codes, you will be able to reach customers easily and quickly with relevant information.

Use maps that work with a variety of mobile devices to attract customers. By including maps, customers can look up your location quickly from their phone.

TIP! Mobile websites should use search engine optimization techniques just as larger websites do. Google is a great place to start your mobile search engine optimization efforts.

Keep your marketing up-to-date and useful. Remember that everything you do has a purpose, so don?t get caught up in the adrenaline of using mobile marketing. The information and products you offer must be directly relevant to customers in your market. Fill the needs and wants of your customers to ensure that they stick with you and continue to buy your products.

As your business begins to develop a new mobile app, remember that it must be relevant to your target market and user-friendly. If the app you have devised for your business isn?t fitting or convenient, it is only going to bring negative attention to your business.

Purchase dedicated short codes to ensure the authenticity of your company. Although, it can be costly, it is linked to your company brand. Your short code will be recognizable and lead people to your business. Buying your own codes will also protect you from legal issues relating to shared codes. There is a chance that you may also be held liable if a code sharing company does something wrong.

TIP! Use of social media is essential for mobile marketing, because social media rules mobile technology. Reward people that share your site or promotions with a special discount.

When you send emails, you must make sure that they are mobile friendly to ensure they stay more effective. Let them click a phone number to make a call instantly. If you send them a website link, make sure it looks good on a phone. A lot of mobiles support emails, so remember this when you are sending out yours to your customers.

Mobile marketing can be a very complex subject. There are a range of opinions on how to successfully market a business, and there are also differing needs from business to business. What might be useful for one business could be useless for another. The tips you just read will help you decide which strategies are right for your business venture

Gay couple sues after photo used in anti-gay flier - U.S. News

Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards, a married couple living in New Jersey, said their engagement photo was altered from the original by the group, Public Advocate of the United States, which opposes gay marriage, in mailers sent during campaigning for Republican statehouse seats in Colorado.

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards posed for their engagement photo, holding hands and kissing, in front of the Brooklyn Bridge in 2010. The image captured one of the happiest days of their lives. But earlier this year, their special moment was soured when the photo was used in two anti-gay mailers in Colorado.

On Wednesday, the couple and their photographer filed a lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Colorado against Public Advocate of the United States, a nonprofit that opposes same-sex marriage. They are seeking a court order saying the group violated the law, damages, costs and attorney fees for the allegedly unauthorized use of the copyrighted photo.

?We want to take back the beautiful moment in our lives that was reflected in our engagement photo before it was hijacked,? Edwards, a 32-year-old college administrator living in Montclair, N.J., told NBC News on Monday before traveling to Colorado to file the lawsuit. ?We also ? want to take a stand for others who might be similarly targeted in the future.?

The couple, who met in New York in 2000, got engaged in December 2009. The next year in May, photographer Kristina Hill snapped their engagement photos. The pair married later that year in a civil ceremony in Connecticut.

?All that we did was what any other couple would do to mark their engagement and have these photos taken for family and friends to share our joy and our excitement and help people (see) what path we were taking toward our wedding,? said Privitere, 37. ?It was a great, great day for us.?

Kristina Hill/Kristina Hill Photography

This original engagement photo of Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards was taken on May 23, 2010. The couple married in Connecticut later that year.

The couple alleged that Public Advocate seized upon that personal moment to spread what Edwards called a ?message of hate? in two mailers it sent this spring during Republican primary races for the Colorado statehouse.

One of the mailers targeted State Sen. Jean White, who supported a bill that would have granted same-sex civil unions. Across the couple?s image were the words: ?State Senator Jean White?s Idea of ?Family Values??? The other one, aimed at House candidate Jeffrey Hare, read: ?Jeffrey Hare?s Vision for Weld County?? Both candidates lost their races.

A friend alerted the couple to the mailers in late June. It?s not clear how Public Advocate got the photo, which the pair had posted to a blog about their engagement and impending nuptials. They say the group never asked the couple or Hill to use it.

When contacted by NBC News for comment on the lawsuit, Eugene Delgaudio, president of Public Advocate, said in an email that he was looking into it but did not elaborate or provide further remarks.

?The use of Tom and Brian?s likenesses, or of Kristina?s copyrighted photo, was wholly gratuitous,? said their attorney, Christine Sun, of the Southern Poverty Law Center. ?Public Advocate could have just paid for a stock photo of a gay couple kissing but instead Public Advocate decided to take this very personal photo of this happy moment and use it to attack gay people.?

? ? the doctrine of fair use is not intended to allow people to use copyrighted work just because it?s cheaper than paying for something,? she added.

The couple has experienced sleepless nights and anxiety since they learned of the mailer. They?re concerned about the impact of the mailers upon others who may have seen it, such as gay youth and their families who may be struggling with accepting them.

?Colorado is a positive step in trying to right a wrong,? said Privitere, who works in entertainment ticketing. ?We?re nervous to be thrust into the public spotlight again. We?re nervous that we?re not going to represent our community the best that we can. But we?re going to do all that we can to try to fix or make this right.?

Gov. Christie defends proposed NJ tax cut plan

LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Monday offered his most vigorous defense yet of a plan to trim taxes by 10 percent, saying tax relief has become "even more urgent" because of recent bad economic reports.

Christie's proposal to phase in a modest residential tax cut over three years beginning in January has been at the center of a partisan storm over the state's economic trend.

Democrats agreed to fund the first phase of the cut ? $183 million ? but Christie said they are holding the money political hostage by refusing to release it unless revenue collections meet his optimistic projection of 7.2 percent. Democrats say it would be irresponsible to cut taxes if the state can't afford to do so. Christie vetoed the Democrats' plan for middle-class tax relief in June because it relied on additional tax revenue from the wealthiest 16,000 filers.

"If we want to get the economy moving in New Jersey, we've got to be more competitive with our neighboring states, and we have the highest tax rates in the region," Christie said when asked Monday about the state's finances after an elementary school groundbreaking in Long Branch. "The reason the tax cut is even more urgent now is to try to make us more competitive with these other states."

Sen. Paul Sarlo, a Bergen County Democrat who chairs the Senate Budget Committee, said Democrats persuaded Christie to support a property tax reduction rather than a personal income tax cut, which would disproportionately benefit the wealthy. But, Sarlo said, Democrats have since adopted a wait-and-see approach because of disappointing revenue collections.

Christie has been calling out Democrats for reneging on the deal after he agreed to go along with Senate President Steve Sweeney's proposal for property tax relief. On Monday, the governor upped the ante: If Democrats don't think the state can afford a tax cut, they should propose a corresponding amount in budget cuts to fund the tax break.

Assemblyman Vincent Prieto, a Democrat who chairs the chamber's budget committee, convened a hearing last week to get a handle on how the state finished the 2012 fiscal year on June 30 and how well it's done in the first two months of the new fiscal year. Christie didn't send the state treasurer to testify and on Monday dismissed the effort as a political circus. But Prieto, of Hudson County, said the session shed light on the state's ongoing and significant fiscal problems.

"We all want a tax cut and a successful state, but it must be a responsible tax cut, and we face major fiscal problems unresolved by this administration," Prieto said.

A report released by the treasury showed tax collections are $100 million below projections for the first two months of the fiscal year. The Legislature's budget expert estimates that the state finished 2012 with about $240 million less than projected. The state's unemployment rate hit 9.9 percent in August, well above the national average of 8.1 percent.

Standard & Poor's lowered New Jersey's credit outlook to negative from stable. Two other ratings houses sounded similar warnings about the state's structural budget deficit and ballooning pension fund obligation but retained a stable outlook for the state.

On Monday, Christie railed against what he termed Democrats' obsession with revenue numbers and defended his conditional veto of a bill that would have required prompt monthly reporting of state finances, even though it mirrored an executive order he signed in 2010 requiring the treasury to publish monthly revenue reports.

"When they play political games, that's what they're going to get in return," Christie said of the Democrats. "They know full well revenue numbers aren't final until they're audited."

In the veto message released Friday, Christie proposed including a provision to issue a $10,000 fine to anyone who leaks budget data.

Though the governor's suggestion appeared to be a slap at the Office of Legislative Services, which provides budget information to the Legislature, and lawmakers who provide it to the media, Christie insisted that wasn't so.

"That stuff is not supposed to be disseminated publicly until it's authorized to be disseminated publicly," he said, "and it can have a negative effect on the markets."

Tesla unveils network of free, solar 'Superchargers' for Model S

1 day

Tesla Motors has answered critics of the range and energy source of electric cars by establishing a network of solar-powered charge stations throughout California, with plans to expand to the rest of the U.S. And if you have a Model S, charging is free forever.

For years it has been an oft-repeated objection to electric cars that while they may not themselves produce carbon emissions, their electricity often is produced by carbon-producing power plants. It's a legitimate problem, though for now unavoidable ? unless, as Tesla demonstrates, you circumvent the power grid altogether.

That's what they've decided to do with their Supercharger stations, a network of solar-powered chargers that will refill your Tesla Model S free of charge. And what's more, they charge at four or five times the rate of even a high-capacity home charger, so you can get 150 miles of range back in half an hour.?

The Superchargers aren't intended for everyday charging, but for long-distance driving: they're?spaced between 100 and 200 miles apart, distant but?well within the 250-mile range of the Model S. At the moment the network is limited to California, but Musk was confident that within two years, much of the U.S. (as well as some of Europe and Asia) will be covered:

As Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at the announcement, "If you want to go from LA to New York, if you pack food and stay with friends, you can leave your wallet at home."

The other nice thing about these stations is that not only do they power themselves, but they're designed to collect more solar energy than they expend on charging vehicles. This extra energy they actually contribute to the grid, so they're a net positive, not a draw.

Tesla's Model S is their newest vehicle, aimed at commuters and families. At around?$50,000 to start, it competes with Lexus and BMW, not Honda and Subaru, but that hasn't stopped it from pre-selling thousands of units. They're only just this month starting to roll out to buyers, so there aren't many on the road just yet.

The Supercharger stations in and around Los Angeles and San Francisco are online?right now, and others will surely be announced by Tesla when they go live. More information can be found at Tesla's press release, and?Engadget has embedded a video of the event.

Apple TV update 5.1 brings shared photo streams and iTunes account swapping, available now

Apple TVs of the second and third-gen variety are getting update 5.1 today, which brings two long-awaited features. Both shared photo streaming and iTunes account switching are now part of Apple's set-top box -- the combination of those two finally freeing parents from the potential nightmare of discovering their child's "not safe for parents" photo streams, of course. The update, spotted by MacRumors, also adds some new AirPlay functionality, enabling users to "send audio content from Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs)." Beyond those two biggies, however, the rest of the update is rather nuts and bolts oriented -- head below for the full list.

Is He Relationship Material ? 3 Lessons I Learned From Computer Analysts

I am not a computer engineer but I have always been close to them, many members of my family and some friend work in fields related to computer science. How does my knowledge of the secrets of computer analysts' work relate to finding the correct man for a healthy, fulfilling relationship?

Detailed Requirement Analysis is essential

When computer experts start to develop software, they need to study the situation and come out with a set of detailed requirements the software has to fulfill.

Which is the lesson here? You must sit and write down what your desired man should have before you go out trying to find him. Many women would think this is a waste of time, but doing this has two clear benefits.

By writing down what you are looking for in a man helps to determine what exactly you are looking for. The same happens with software development, writing down the software requirements helps to find inconsistencies or missing things you need to know before starting or during the development.

Maybe you are looking for a man with some characteristics that are often incompatible in a single person. The second benefit of writing down the must have's for the man takes us to the next lesson.

Requirements need to be validated during development or testing phase

By having the list of must have's at hand, the woman will be able to determine if a man passes the list. The same happens with software development, where computer analysts need to have the list of requirements at hand to be sure that what they are constructing doesn't go against the requirements.

In addition, there are some characteristics that maybe are difficult to check in the first dates. That is why you need to have your list at hand to be testing if your man still is what you want.

In software development happens the same, when the software is tested, at the end of the development needs to be validated against the requirements.

Don't allow changes in the requirements without a detailed study of the impact

What sometimes happen in software development is that changes in requirements are introduced without a complete study of how this impacts in the software and the rest of the requirements.

This teaches us that changes in what we are looking for in a man should be analyzed. Perhaps you start to date with a man who passes almost all the must have's of the list but there are a few that not; you may be tempted to delete that items from the list.

You can do that, but before deleting those items, the list should be analyzed and studied again.

Following these secrets, if you are looking for serious relationship, you will be able to determine if your man is relationship material.

Group CBT Helps Women with Low Self-Esteem | Beck Institute Blog

A recent study published in Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy indicates that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) group intervention may be helpful for women with low self-esteem, and co-morbid depression and anxiety. In the current study, researchers used a set of CBT-based self-help workbooks, Overcoming Low Self-Esteem Self-Help Course (Fennell, 2006), to implement group therapy in a recruited sample of 37 women with low self-esteem (as indicated by the Robson Self Concept Questionnaire (RSCQ)). The group met once per week for two hours, for a total of eight sessions. Final results revealed clinically significant improvements in self-esteem and mood, including decreased depression and anxiety scores at post-intervention. While the mechanism for change is not yet clear, the researchers hypothesize that the group experience, combined with their learning adaptive skills and gaining new perspectives via CBT treatment, enhanced participants? overall feelings of acceptance and increased confidence, both of which contribute to healthy self-esteem.

Morton, L., Roach, L., Reid, H., & Stewart, S. H. (2012). An evaluation of a CBT group for women with low self-esteem. Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy, 40, 2, 221-5.

Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a non-profit organization founded in 1994 as an outgrowth of Dr. Aaron T. Beck?s original Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. Today Beck Institute is an international training and resource center for health and mental health professionals, educators, and students worldwide.
