Hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps children with learning disorders

Tue. July 23, 2013 by Sima Ash, CHom, CNC

Hyperbaric Oxygen News(NaturalHealth365) Conventionally speaking, there doesn?t seem to be much hope for children (or adults) suffering with learning disorders such as, autism. In fact, most western-trained medical professionals seem to believe that pharmaceutical drugs are the best choice in treating brain disorders or cognitive difficulties. Fortunately, they are wrong and, in truth, there are natural solutions.

One of the therapies that is helping those with learning disorders is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and the results have been overwhelmingly positive.

What is HBOT?

HBOT is the medical use of oxygen at a level higher than atmospheric pressure. HBOT has been used for years for a variety of conditions including carbon monoxide poisoning, wound healing in diabetics and a variety of other conditions which are covered by medical insurance.

The use of HBOT in other countries for autism sparked the interest here in the United States. However, the use of HBOT for autism is not covered by most insurance plans. Even so, a physician?s prescription is required to receive treatment by an HBOT clinic.

How does HBOT help children with learning disorders?

HBOT reduces swelling or excess fluid in the brain that can help people function more clearly. HBOT also increases the oxygen tissue concentration which increases cerebral blood flow. This new blood and oxygen can stimulate brain cells to function more normally.

In addition, this increase, in blood and oxygen, revives mitochondria and actually causes mitochondrial biogenesis, so that if you need more mitochondria in your neurons more of them will form.

A multicenter, randomized, double-blind controlled trial study published in BMC Pediatrics on 62 children with autism for forty sessions of HBOT. After 40 sessions, the children receiving HBOT improved significantly over the control group, particularly in overall function, receptive language, social interaction, eye contact, irritability, stereotypic movements, hyperactivity speech and sensory/cognitive awareness.

Children who had less severe autism scores to begin with showed the most improvement.

Another study published in BMC Pediatrics looked at the effect of HBOT on oxidative stress, inflammation, and symptoms in children with autism. HBOT was shown to significantly reduce inflammation.

The Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand also published a study that demonstrated 75% of children who underwent just 10 HBOT treatments showed significant improvements in social development, fine motor and eye-hand coordination, language development, gross motor development and self-help skills.

Robert Hendren, executive director of UC California?s M.I.N.D. Institute states while some children show improvements after 40 sessions, others get better after 80 sessions. He adds that some parents buy FDA approved chambers for home use after they finish treatments at a center for home ?tune-ups?.

Homeopathy compliments HBOT therapy

Some parents are concerned about the tight space of the HBOT and wonder if it will trigger claustrophobia. I wanted to share two homeopathic remedies that I have seen help not only with HBOT but also with closed MRIs.

AconitumNapellus ? relieves a state of fear and anxiety and is very helpful for fear of heights and claustrophobia. Other indications for use of aconitum include not wanting to be touched, unhappiness, worry, fears crowds and finds music unbearable.

Pulsatilla ? not only helpful for claustrophobia, but helpful for fear of the dark as well. Other general indications for pulsatilla include being easily discouraged, highly emotional, sad, cries while speaking and given to extremes of pain and pleasure.
