Microsoft May Bring Back Family Sharing, Other Lost Features of Xbox One

In a lengthy?interview with IGN,?Xbox One chief product officer Marc Whitten went to great lengths to apologize for the messaging surrounding the Xbox One reveal and presence at E3. It's nice to finally see a company take on the responsibility for their own mistakes. However, as nice as it is to see them admit the mistakes they made in how the Xbox One was delivered publicly, what's more interesting is that some features that ended up getting nixed along with DRM and always online could be making a return at some point.

?If it?s something that people are really excited about and want, we?re going to make sure that we find the right way to bring it back. Taking Family Sharing out of the launch window was not about ?we?re going to take our toys and go home? or something like that,? he said.

?It was just sort of the logistics of ?how do we get this very, very clear request that people really want, that choice, and how do we make sure we can do an excellent job of that, get to launch, and then be able to build a bunch of great features?? In the future I think you?re going to see the ways that we change how you discover, how you consume, share, play.?

I just really hope that if and when they bring back the Family Sharing Plan, they actually make it out to be the best of the initial possibility. As in, being able to share your library with 10 family members without restrictions. As we came to find out, it only let family members play the game for an hour, which essentially makes it like a demo. They can already get demo's for free as it stands, so if they lift that restriction this could really be a revolutionary feature.

Features like those were only removed, if I had to guess, because it was tied to the 24 hour online check-in system - it's highly doubtful Mircrosoft wanted to nix them entirely. They just needed to retool them to find a better way to deliver them. At the end of the day, it appears there will be some major features added to the Xbox One over the lifespan of the console. While this is indeed typical, it's nice that we least have some idea of features we can look forward to in the future.
